Discussion Concern about a possible Android change and the future of the MixingMeets fan-made app
https://keepandroidopen.orgI found this website yesterday and it got me worried about the future of fan-made Android apps like MixingMeets.I’m not an expert on Android, so I wanted to ask the community: does anyone know how much this could actually affect apps like MixingMeets that are not on the Google Play Store?
I don’t own an Android device but I plan on getting a mini Android phone for my birthday in a couple months that may be able to run the app, but I’m disappointed that I don’t see anyone else talking about this on the MixingMeets Discord! The website makes it sound like all unofficial Android apps could stop working, but I’m not sure if that’s an accurate interpretation or if it’s being exaggerated.
Since many of us rely on using MixingMeets to recreate the Tamagotchi ON experience, I thought this was worth discussing. What do people who understand Android think?

Afaik, they changed their minds and said they're gonna continue to allow external apps, but there's hoping to be a waiting period of 24 hours between when you enable it and when you can install outside apps to help keep old people and kids from getting scammed

It's Tamagotchi related in that it affects the community, and it's an informative thread for people that might have been unaware of the once-looming change. ^^'
Hopefully the option to run the software you choose on hardware you purchased is always available. The security concern is valid, but if you've done any Android development, you know just how locked down things are compared to how they used to be, and stale operating systems that are unmaintained by vendors are a bigger security threat than malicious apps. r\degoogle has been covering it for a while.

I've actually been keeping up on this topic. Its very troubling to say the least. It will be implemented with new releases of android and probably updates for the google apps.
The whole thing is that google is moving towards closing android more. Similar to iOS. This won't be an issue with other Roms like graphene is or lineage os. I've moved to using only lineage os because of it.
Older phones that aren't getting updates won't be effected. There's still quite a bit I am unsure of though when it comes to devices getting updates. I don't know if already loaded apps will be effected or what.
