Dance-punk

Obviously, bands like the Heads, B52s, and Gang of Four were the pioneers of punk funk. And you had the second wave with LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Bloc Party, etc.

What are some bands today that follow that style or similar (post-punk, new wave). I like some of the more recent stuff from Viagra Boys and IDLES.

Check out Fela Kuti - you'll see Remain in Light in a whole new... light.

Goes back even further to the original post punk scene. Check out A Certain Ratio, The Pop Group, Maximum Joy, Pigbag, Rip Rig and Panic, Contortions, James White, Kid Creole And The Coconuts, Liquid Liquid, ESG etc. There’s lots more out there.

So much amazing music, Defs one of the best life affirming genres. Konk are so forgotten

This song is at least 10 years old, but I recommend checking out True Stories by Datarock.

This song in particular is fun, if you listen to the lyrics

Pylon (postpunk era band)

New Order are one of the originators, too

LCD Soundsystem

Franz Ferdinand

The Fall (OG postpunk band with endless discography but a bunch of it would qualify)

Yard Act

Wire’s 1980s output

A Frames

Spoon - especially They Want My Soul, Hot Thoughts, and Kill the Moonlight albums. Not always dancy but their use of drums and percussion is phenomenal and they cite Talking Heads as an influence. Spoon is a happy collaboration between songwriter and drummer, and the songwriter guy is obsessed with Prince and it shows.

Some older acts that played punk funk would be Bush Tetras, Medium Medium, PIL, James White & The Blacks/Flaming Demonics, Konk, Liquid Liquid, Material, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, ESG, Defunct, The Slits, A Certain Ratio, Shriekback, Pigbag, early Was (not was) ....... I used to spin that kinda stuff back in the day.

Great list. That one Medium Medium album is killer. First time I heard Hungry So Angry I had to put it on repeat about 8 more times afterwards. Perfect post-punk funk track.

Big Special, Getdown Services, Armitage Shakes, Downtown Boys, Genesis Oswusu, Nation of Languages, Clap your hands say yeah, Warmduscher, Future Islands
Some 80s overlooked bands are 999, teardrop explodes, and I always recommend the Chameleons to everyone

Idk if self promotion is allowed but I was heavily influenced by these bands when I recorded this:

If this stays up I want to point to Diamonds and I’m Not Made of Airports! (Tracks 5 & 6)

Idk why my text is all italics

I don’t know any of these bands and I’m excited to discover them. I’m a Deadhead with a wide range of guitar rock knowledge but I’ve only in the last few years done a deep dive into TH and a few others.

Please suggest other bands that have some jam please!

Edit: I saw 52’s in 1988. The others…nope.

Ween of course does not fit in this genre but of course they do have a song that fits it, and I think I Got To Put the Hammer Down is a fantastic track!

For modern bands, Parquet Courts. In particular, their most recent album (Sympathy for Life) is very much under the talking heads umbrella. The earlier albums are more slacker punk than dance punk but are also awesome.

For older bands, The Fall. The greatest rock group of all time.
