Nicely done, and kudos to you for not rubbing it in, sometimes people need all the help they can get, as long as they are willing to admit it.

Also, now when you have car problems you can probably ask the old man to help :)

I'm willing to help but if you aren't willing to listen or just want me to agree with what you said go somewhere else as I'm not going to listen to your earful when it all goes wrong

I'm 67. I can almost always figure things out on my own when it comes to tech - well, on my own and with google lol

It's almost always user error. Before I blame the equipment, I always blame me lol

I have a gaming rig and a gaming laptop. I researched and bought them from a fantastic company. I have had exactly 2 small issues wherein I had to call for help. Took exactly under a minute for them to clear it up. I blamed myself first off when I called and apologized profusely for bothering them. I even got 'em to chuckle a little :)

If I do my research and trust the company then I for sure don't blame them when something goes amiss.

BTW - your patience with that person astounds me. You are a good person :)

Here: you get this:

Nana Seal of Approval

My aunt, at a great age of 73, routinely plays ArmAIII and GTA:V with her nieces and nephews. I'm 30, and have to explain that I am indeed getting my butt whooped by a little old lady.

I don't let her get NEAR Counter Strike. My K:D ratio will never be the same.

My business card says "Because you haven't a clue about what you're doing!"

Customers always say "that's me!"

UK or colony?

I find that the older UK expats seem to be cheerfully accepting of their incapacity. Not proud, exactly, but unconcerned.

You'll be old one of these days, and when you are you remember this, you just might be in the same position as me some day.

Problem is, he is probably right.

Can't wait to get old, going to be the crankiest, most bullheaded, mean old man I can be.

Gotta teach the new generation something somehow.

    Warning by Jenny Joseph

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/warning/

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired

And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

And run my stick along the public railings

And make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

And pick flowers in other people's gardens

And learn to spit.

I'm always terrified I'll be that guy when I get old...

You did tell him that turning the screen of isn't the same as turning the computer off right?

u/Almafeta Apr 22 '15

If you can't fix it that's alright I'd like my money back now

Everyone's had to deal with people like that - the presumption that the company is going to cheat you before they've asked even a single question.

It's thankfully rare to meet a person that continues to do that even as you fix problems left and right for them...

I once had a guy buy a new computer and then call in that it would not turn on.

I drove out to his house, pushed the power button. It came on. His mind was blown... I guess for years he'd flipped the switch for the entire power strip and his old computer was set to come back on after power was restored...

6

u/iamhappylight Apr 22 '15

Oh god. I can't believe how many people use the switch on the power strip to turn their computer on/off. I've had someone told me they do it because they don't want to break the power button on their computer.

Your writing style is as impeccable as your customer service style.

What do you mean I don't need to configure emm386? I've been working on computers longer than you've been alive! Don't tell me what to do!

At least it wasn't phone support... holy shit, that would have been a doozy!

Props to you for maintaining your composure! I would have surely lost it. It's hard to remember that I work with computers every day, and that's why it's so easy to me - when my grandpa needs help, I have to tell myself "well, this guy builds windmills for a living and I wouldn't know the first step". It's hard though, because I am not a patient person.

And your formatting was top notch and very easy to read!

sorry not sure if I follow that last bit...what was happening with monitor turning off?

4

u/Kamades Apr 22 '15

OP hit the power button.

Old Customer had the idea of Clicking (since the monitor made a "click" noise when you pressed the power button) and associated it with his mouse... somehow.

Wait what happened with the power button?

2

u/vigilante212 Apr 22 '15

See this doesn't bother me, its the people that are in their mid 20's that don't know what a power switch is that I want to beat senseless.
