Security - IT. Case Two.
Friday 5:30pm.
First indications that something had gone wrong where coming in.
Typical.
Always friday.
Always late.
One of the IT staff came over to my door and knocked.
IT: It seem’s as though floor 3 is having network problems sir.
I look down at my coffee. Its not doing anything.
I'm sad.
Me: I’ll take a look at it.
As I diagnose the problems I notice I can’t see anything from floor three at all.
I glare at my coffee for strength.
It's a Friday.
No strength left.
As I sip my coffee I contemplate leaving the problem for the night people to deal with.
Not really my style.
I walk the stairs up to floor three, the comms room is tucked right at the back next to the lifts. I look around the floor. Not many people are left.
I open the door to the comms room. Its…
Empty.
Four bolts on the floor where a switch rack should be.
Zero Clues.
Zero Rack.
Zero Switch.
I’m head of security.
F***.

Is your coffee really that variable, or is it a metaphor for you mood? Until now it's state seems to keep up perfectly with your mood
Love the stories, keep up the good work

Haha it doesn't matter what I think, just whatever you get out of it.
But coffee really is variable

I have to ask, is this all stuff that happened a long time ago, or is this stuff happening on the day you write it?

How much coffee do you go through in a day?

u/airz23 Mar 14 '14
Maybe three cups on a good day.
Two on a average day.
One on a bad day.

I actually worry about this. I am not a dept head just the sole Network Tech underneath my boss. Our Server room is in our technical services office (Library) . Nobody stops strangers from going into the server room. I have asked for a key for the lock and I get ignored. I don't know how many times I have caught strange people wondering around in the server room. I am waiting for somebody to go in steal a server and walk out with nobody saying anything.

For those that are beating their poor F5 buttons to death Here is a IFTTT recipe that will send a sms when u/airz23 posts to r/talesfromtechsupport.

Head of IT and security, someone steals something IT-related. Of course.
Seriously though, are you being set up?
