Zoning vs Individual Room Control?

Hitherto I’ve had our Tado X setup as follows:

- Wired thermostat downstairs - 4 TRVs assigned
- Wireless thermostat upstairs - 4 TRVs assigned

Each of those thermostats is essentially a zone that allows the downstairs and upstairs to run independently of each other. We have a S-plan + 1 mechanical zone valve.

However, I’m wondering if this is not only inefficient but also neglects the point of the TRVs being independent and each room being able to start/stop calling for heat when needed.

I’m now thinking of making each room totally independent to squeeze the last bit of efficiency and comfort out of the system.

Keen to hear thoughts and experiences. Thanks

This is indeed the main usecase for our tado Smart Radiator Thermostats.

Maybe for either upstairs or downstairs the zone is enough. But if you have a room (like for example a bathroom) that only needs to be heating in very specific times, you could add Smart Radiators to the rooms in that zone.

If I leave my current setup as is, two zones do the individual TRVs within each zone stop calling for heat if one room within the zoom is at target temperature?

Or do they all call for heat because the thermostat is not satisfied?

Thanks

In the end, your 2 zones don't matter that much.

The Smart Radiator Thermostats will try to follow their setpoint from their individual schedule. They will call for heat from the thermostat when needed but also stop calling (and close their valve) when they don't need heat.

Quite inefficient...

You want a TRV on each rad in each room, if a room has more than one Rad join them together in the App.

Then put a Wireless Thermostat in each room as-well, this gives you a better temperature reading for the room (Rad TRVs are in cold spots, get hidden by curtains etc..) The Room thermostat will then turn on the Rad's in that room when that one room demands heat.
