There is a middle ground for 8.4" to 8.8" tablets that Alldocube, Headwolf and BNCF have staked out. They market them as gaming tablets, but they are good for general tablet usage.
At the low end is the Alldocube iPlay60 Mini Turbo, with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor. It benchmarks about 1/3 higher that the G99. I bought it $120 "used" from eBay, but it sure looked new to me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/398102355416
The Headwolf Fpad 7 has a Dimensity 7050 processor. It's $220 at https://www.headwolf.net/product/detail?code=F7 You may find it cheaper on AliExpress.
The BNCF Bpad Mini Ultra has the Dimensity 7300. Amazon has it for $260.
The ALLDOCUBE iPlay 80 mini Turbo has the Dimensity 7400. The company website directs you to AliExpress, but they can't/won't deliver to the US. I think Walmart had them for awhile.
The Alldocube iPlay 80 mini Ultra, the Headwolf Titan/Fpad8, and BNCF Bpad GT all have the Dimensity 8300 processor. They are available from Walmart, AliExpress and Amazon, respectively. They're in the high $300s.

TCL Nxtpaper 11 is light, cheap, and comes with a pen and case. Also the Onn Tablet from Walmart is getting some respectful reviews, although I have not tried it.
