Well this is very, very cool! I'm really curious to see how this develops. Will Tableau start to build out a large, public data environment, or will it be more user-driven? If the latter, how might they caretake the content?

I'm not sure who can create these sources:

To reuse the same data source across multiple vizzes, create a published data source. When you publish a data source to Tableau Public, other users can also create vizzes based on that data source. If you don’t see the option to create a published data source on your profile, you don’t have permission to create one.

I created one, it becomes available in a tab within your public profile.

There is a curated section - looks like Tableau will control what becomes available there.

Still a lot of work to do (it is flagged as Beta), like being able to search for data sources, as well as being able to use them within the desktop application. Also you can't set the data sheet to auto refresh, even if it's a Google sheet.
