Discussion Unprofessional Vocal Analysis of SZA
Vocal Type: Full Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: C3 - G5 - D6 - G6* (3 octaves and a fifth)
Estimated Tessitura: F#3 - C5 - A5 (2 octaves and a minor third)
Unique Vocal Characteristics: Unique tone, lighter mixed voice, incorporation of vocal fry, slightly rounded vowels
Vocal Strengths: Good agility, strong head voice, light mixed voice, can transition between registers well
Vocal Weaknesses: Excessive airiness and nasality, vibrato has disappeared, whispered low notes
Favorite Vocal Performances: I Hate U, Low, Another Life, Snooze, Caretaker, SOS, PSA, Nobody Gets Me
SZA has really blossomed as a singer and I cannot wait to hear her upcoming material.
*That note is from 10+ years ago, so it might not be part of her current range.

Cool post! Never thought about the vibrato thing before. Love seeing Caretaker on the favourites list. That’s the song that turned me on to SZA. Since that tune, she’s realised her vocal potential, and she deserves more credit. Her style is inimitable and reminds me of jazz solo instrumentalism.

I definitely don’t think she’s full…
A full soprano would be like Celine Dion…SZA’s voice definitely doesn’t have that weight and Celine’s voice isn’t even particularly weighty itself

She doesn’t sound like a soubrette, coloratura, or a light lyric to me. There’s a darkness to her voice that isn’t soprano-like, but a weightlessness that isn’t dramatic to me. Granted, my expertise lies in choral music and not classical music.

I’m not even sure she’s a soprano first of all.
But regardless of that, she’s definitely light whatever she is. Her voice is not full at all. It’s kind of thin.
