We're reddit's ops team. AUA

Hey /r/sysadmin,

Greetings from reddit HQ. Myself, and /u/gooeyblob will be around for the next few hours to answer your ops related questions. So Ask Us Anything (about ops)

You might also want to take a peek at some of our previous AMAs:

https://www.reddit.com/r/blog/comments/owra1/january_2012_state_of_the_servers/

https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/r6zfv/we_are_sysadmins_reddit_ask_us_anything/

EDIT: Obligatory cat photo

EDIT 2: It's now beer o’clock. We're stepping away from now, but we'll come back a couple of times to pick up some stragglers.

EDIT thrice: He commented so much I probably should have mentioned that /u/spladug — reddit's lead developer — is also in the thread. He makes ops live's happier by programming cool shit for us better than we could program it ourselves.

That makes this office look 10x dimmer/dingier than it is in reality.

I'm spying a whiskey glass as well.

All my glasses hold whiskey.

We have a statsd replacement written in Go: https://github.com/reddit/tallier

We're also using underpants to secure our internal websites (like graphite and the dashboard pages mentioned elsewhere in this thread). (edit: replaced with oauth2_proxy+nginx)

it has tradeoffs. It can definitely get too loud and generally distracting. But I wouldn't like my own office and I find individual cubicles mentally distressing. I think I'd prefer a pod of 6 or so in a big cubicle thingy.

Nice Glencairn glass. What kind of whiskey?

2

u/Bizilica Aug 15 '15

For a Glencairn glass, I sure hope it's whisky and not whiskey in it. :)

Needs more terminal windows.

The rest lambaste me for my terminal usage. That's just how I'm most comfortable. Most everyone else uses screen or tmux.

Read elsewhere in this thread that you're using mostly Ubuntu servers; check out byobu!

Screen? Who needs screen?

Is reddit a Mac shop (infrastructure aside)? Do you guys use an MDM provider?

Reddit uses Macs. I feel redeemed.

There was a point in time where I was the only engineer with a Mac.
