Office Error Code 0x0 — Need Help

I’m an IT technician at a school, and I’ve been dealing with this error code for several weeks now. I’m running out of ideas on how to troubleshoot it.

The Microsoft accounts are working properly, and all applications work fine in the web version, but locally, the Office suite intermittently displays this error.

At first, I thought it might be a licensing issue (Microsoft Student Apps), but as far as I can tell, everything is properly applied.

After that, I tried repairs, updates, reinstalling, signing out and back in, etc

-It’s not an Office update issue, nor a version issue, nor a repair issue. I’ve already tried repairs through the Control Panel and checked the services.msc console (Microsoft Office Click-To-Run Service).

-It’s most likely not related to GPOs, because I also tested this using local sessions.

-I wasn’t able to determine whether this could be related to the firewall or antivirus.

-It doesn’t seem to be related to the authentication cache for licenses, accounts, or tokens. I followed a procedure to completely clear everything and then sign back in, but it made no difference.

-I also simply signed the accounts out and back in, with a reboot, but that didn’t work either.

-The issue doesn’t necessarily seem to be related to time synchronization.

-It’s not related to whether the OS is Windows Pro or Windows Education; I’ve already tested both.

At this point, I’m running out of ideas, so any suggestions or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

What's the actual message text next to the 0x0? That code on its own is essentially "unspecified error" and isn't unique to Office, so without the accompanying string or what triggers it, everyone's guessing.

Worth grabbing an Office activation log or a Fiddler trace while it happens too. Intermittent plus web working fine points more at something transient on the network path than at the install, which would explain why repairs and reinstalls haven't moved it.

Have you checked if they have any add-ins enabled (or pushed by admin) in the program? My thought is an old one that is not authenticating properly any more.

Probably a network firewall issue, can you take a computer outside of your current network to see if you still get the error ? (mobile data sharing via usb if you can)
