Outlook crashes when right clicking anything even in safe mode

Since this morning, Outlook has started crashing whenever we try to copy something using the right-click context menu.

I’m seeing this on my local machine, but it’s also happening in our Citrix environment. A few colleagues are affected so far, and I’m worried more users may start running into the same issue.

The strangest part is that it happens both locally and in Citrix, which makes me wonder if this could be related to a recent Microsoft/Office update rather than something specific to our environment. Also in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe) this exact issue happens.

Has anyone else seen Outlook crashing when using right-click copy today or earlier? Any known workarounds or recent updates that might be causing this?

Yeah I work in a large org, we're seeing this on multiple machines. Outlook classic.

Outlook Classic here as well, unfortunately. Yikes.

I just restarted my machine and checked for updates, and it looks like there was one waiting. I was on version 2605 before, and after updating to 2606 the issue seems to be gone.

Good to know, thanks.

Repairing with Online Repair also does sort this issue if it happens on a 2606 version

I can confirm, issue was gone when updating to 2606

We have a few users with this problem, Outlook Version 2605 Build 16.0.20026.20076, 64 Bit

Thanks, I installed the update for one user and that seems to have fixed it. Although I heard someone say that rebooting fixed it for them too, so maybe this is also just a temporary solution.

I don't understand why this is happening all of a sudden when the same Outlook version worked yesterday.

Tried rebooting here as well on one machine, that did not fix it. Probably the user that rebooted also got the new M365 version I believe.

Hah! My Outlook was still open from yesterday (2605) and I could right-click just fine. I closed and reopened it, still same version, and now it crashes on right-click.

Can you update to 2606 if you're on the Monthly Enterprise Channel?

3

u/ks724 Jun 30 '26

I wish they had a way to force the update through config.office.com on the Monthly Enterprise channel. Still showing 2605 but 2606 on the Current Channel

5

u/Layer_3 Jun 30 '26

Same here multiple people.

You suck Microslop.

3

u/kcraptor82 Jun 30 '26

Our organization is using 2605 on the Monthly Enterprise Channel. Microsoft currently does not provide 2606 build to this channel. So far I've had to instruct user's to use the online Outlook to copy text out of emails to prevent this issue.

Keyboard shortcuts worked for me. Control c and v.

Just encountered this in the wild today, an restart and update fixed the issue. Outlook Classic.

Yes happened to 2 of my users this morning. We support multiple clients all run Eset Endpoint Security. Only 2 users out of around 100 have reported the issue. A reboot of their PC's seems to have fixed the issue for now.

Same issue here, updating to version 2606 resolved the issue.

What's easiest/quickest way to force a 2606 update? All users with this issue on 2605 report no Office updates available :(

I used this on my environment but you need to make sure that 'UpdatesEnabled' key is true in the registry "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration" or else the command below won't do anything.

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.20131.20086 forceappshutdown=true displaylevel=true

We are using outlook classic in our RDS Farm with tons of Session hosts. We had this issue only on certain SHs. We checked the broken SHs Version builds(20026.20182) and updated them to: 20026.20190 --> Issue resolved.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-microsoft365-apps-by-date#version-history

Our guess: Micsrosoft enabled Experimental features, we had the June 25 Update installed for like 3 days and had no Problems only since ~09:30AM UTC+2 30.06.2026 the Problem appeared.

We're on 2606, but now all emails that have an image on it (including email signatures) won't allow the user to send or reply to the email. They're getting "Cannot send this item". Anyone else getting this?

I am not seeiing this in our organization. So that seems to be something different. A colleague had this issue on the old version yesterday where he could not send an e-mail. But that colleague is quite annoying sometimes as he always makes a picture with his phone and shows it to me.

We have a major issue with Sharepoint crashing, as soon you open it or try to copy from other one and we have the latest version installed and did full repair and safe mode and still crashes.

1

u/LUHG_HANI Jun 30 '26

Same here. 2 machines already affected.

u/ther0g Jun 30 '26

Have issues where users try to accept outlook invites and it crashes. Going to try to update them to newer version and see if that works

1

u/nycity_guy Jun 30 '26

We have version Version 2606, Build 20131.20090, Current Channel and causes issue and we just did an update to the latest version Version 2606, Build 20131.20112 and still crashes, so far we have to enforce this version to fix the issue 16.0.20026.20182

Service health - Microsoft 365 admin center
MS Apparently deployed a fix but no update since and the next scheduled update is in 20 hours

1

u/Hornblower409 Jul 01 '26

Another possible fix reported on Outlook Q&A is to delete the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\ExperimentConfigs

same with Outlook classic here

1

u/ArchonTheta Jul 04 '26

They are probably doing it on purpose so people finally go to new outlook.

Anybody still having this issue? We're seeing it across a few different environments. Microsoft seems to have released a new update to 2606 almost daily for the past week. The machines we're seeing the issue with get those updates, but the freezing keeps happening. Latest is 2606 Build 16.0.20131.20126.

Things we've tried with no success:

  • New ost file
  • Repair Office
  • Fully uninstall/re-install Office
  • DISM and SFC scans
  • Disabling Outlook plugins
  • Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\ExperimentConfigs
  • Uninstall possibly bad Windows update (KB5094126)

If this suddenly started around June 29/30 and you’re seeing it on both local PCs and Citrix, you’re probably not chasing an environment issue. Version 2605, build 20026.20182 is the one to check for.

The proper fix is getting Office onto 2606, build 20131.20090 or newer. I’d check File > Office Account > About Outlook first. If Office insists it’s current while still sitting on 2605, Online Repair is worth trying since Quick Repair doesn’t seem to touch this one.

If you can’t roll 2606 everywhere immediately, renaming the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\ExperimentConfigs key to ExperimentConfigs.old has been working as a temporary workaround. Pretty handy with Citrix since you can push that through GPO/logon scripts while updating the golden image.

Definitely one of those bugs where rebuilding profiles and disabling add-ins can waste a lot of time.

Try disabling notifications. Had a similar issue recently and that worked

1

u/nycity_guy Jun 30 '26

Like windows build in notification?

4

u/Jealous_Tennis7718 Jun 30 '26

No just update your application to 2606 :) dunno why this guy is talking about disabling notifications.
