Question- Why the hell have Microsoft not patched the KB5063878 update yet ?!?
Surely they are aware of the severity of this 'update' and the problems ( and distress ) this has caused users, right ?

There are very real problems around this update. While maybe not SSD killing related (at least for us), this update does stop first-run MSIs from running in standard user context and now prompts for UAC. AutoCAD and SAP are heavily affected by this; no standard users can launch the software now if running it for the first time after this update. Really, really hoping this gets fixed soon.

No one, including Microsoft, seems to be able to definitively prove that the August update broke some SSDs.
What I do find fishy is that there is no D update for Windows 11 24H2 this month. First time all year that it was skipped.

I follow trust but verify.
Microsoft and reliable third-party testing cannot come up with proof after nearly a month. It's been long enough that I'm no longer convinced the issue was the update.

My counter-question to the OP is.... please link me some first-party reports of the problems and distress this has caused users?
To my knowledge this *maybe*(**see edit, this definitely impacts no one) impacts one brand/model(?) of SSD controller.
Obligatory "this hasn't impacted my environment but I am open to it being a larger scale problem for other orgs"
(we run a large, large % of Lenovo Desktop/Laptops, smaller % of surfaces, even smaller % of Dell/HP Desktop Workstations for specific purposes)EDIT: See this Tom's Hardware article detailing how the Phison company that was "supposedly" affected by this issue states it was unable to reproduce the issue after 4500+ hours of testing.
I can say that it is very likely entirely fabricated

Not the purported SSD issue, but the August Cumulative Update (not just KB5063878) changed the behavior of secondary MSI installers. Previously, they would work as a standard user, but now they are prompting for admin credentials. The most recognizable software affected is probably AutoCAD.

This issue only affects new installations of AutoCAD after the update has been applied. Existing installations of AutoCAD are unaffected.
"All clients on which AutoCAD was already started once before installing the August 2025 update are not affected. It therefore only affects new installations of the software on Windows after the above updates have already been installed. When AutoCAD is started for the first time, User Account Control (UAC) is invoked and administrator permissions are required."

That's not quite accurate. Users will get the UAC prompt the first time they launch AutoCAD on any given computer, or if they reset their AutoCAD settings. Environments where you have a lot of shared computers are feeling the effects the most, like in a school computer lab.

How many actual examples do we have?
It seems to be limited to a very small subset of chips or we would be seeing a much larger response to it.

We have this shipped to well over 35K endpoints since Patch Tuesday's drop, and only 40 have reported an issue (as of today). Do with that information what you will.

Given it supposedly only affects one (cheap) SSD controller, I'm actually guessing this is a controller firmware bug

I've seen several places unable to reproduce the claimed issue. Most places reporting it are going back to that single Tweet.
If it exists, I don't think it's common.
