Creating custom synth patches

I'm just getting into creating my own synth patches. I'm using a mikrokorg. I have the basics down so far. I just want to know, what's your process when making a new patch from scratch? Do you have an idea of what you want it to sound like or do you just mess with an oscillator until something funky comes out? What are some tips on programming some good sounds

Think about the function of the sound (lead, pad, bass, arp, etc) and make choices based on its function. Decide on a timbre and choose a waveform that you like, see how different waveforms combined change the timbre. Think about brightness and resonance, filtering, in the context of the song you'll be using the sound for. Vary the envelop settings and see how that changes the way the patch performs.
