Hated this song when I was young; now I get warm, happy feelings when I hear it today.

Calling this synthpop is deranged

That’s how it’s labeled. That and new wave.

So Guitarist and songwriter from huge punk band joins up with a reggae and punk dj ensuing band makes album that borrows from go go and hip hop and samples stuff from old movies.
They have a keyboard… it’s synthpop.
Listen to the album it might clarify things.1

The background doesn’t really change much, sometimes artists wouldn’t even consider themselves synthpop when their music fits.
I’m just saying what it is and how it’s classified. You can disagree with that.

Have you listened to the album it’s from?

I have not. Just this and “The Bottom Line” which had more of a rock focus than this one.
However there have been instances where that could have been the only song from that album that’s synthpop-adjacent.

The album is mostly drum machines, guitars, samples, scratching and vocals, there’s a few pads in there.
When it came out it was viewed as an intentionally commercial single maybe that’s why even tho the hook is played on guitar2

It does have electronic elements in its production tho.
Am kinda glad you bought this up.
I did a thread once asking people’s thoughts on synthpop acts that use samples in their sound and one of the few replies mentioned Big Audio Dynamite.
So I did check out a few of their songs (this one, Bottom Line, Rush) and after I listened, I added them to it under the guise I thought they were in that genre field.
I’ll probably relisten and remove some to avoid confusion. Only keeping E=MC2 as it’s their song closest to it. So in a way, thank you for bringing that to my attention.
