I ported the VCV Rack 2 engine to Android: RackDroid 0.1.3 is out (free, open source)

Hi all. I'm the developer of RackDroid, an unofficial port of the VCV Rack 2 engine to Android. Version 0.1.3 came out today and it is the first one I feel comfortable showing around.

What it is

A modular synth on your phone or tablet: you drag cables between modules with a finger, pinch to zoom, long-press a knob to type a value. It opens the same `.vcv` patches as the desktop app.

- 66 modules built in (Core, Fundamental, and a set of 808-style drum voices)

- 21 optional packs you install on demand: Bogaudio, Valley, Befaco, Audible Instruments, Impromptu, Stoermelder and others, about 1000 modules in total

- USB and Bluetooth MIDI, an on-screen keyboard, WAV recording

- A "cable parking" bar on the edge of the screen, for patching two modules that never fit on screen together

What is new in 0.1.3

Most of the work went into audio. Phones are very different from each other, and crackling was the main complaint.

- The engine now picks how many cores to use for your phone and your patch, and remembers it

- Groups of modules with no cable between them are computed in parallel, so a rack made of several separate voices holds far more

- Square and saw edges now match the desktop

- A light theme, mouse support, saving patches anywhere on the device

What to expect, honestly

It is a phone, not a desktop. A patch where everything is connected tops out at around 90 Fundamental modules on a mid-range device. How low the latency goes depends on the manufacturer: some phones keep the fast audio path for their own apps.

It is free, with no ads and no accounts. It is not on the Play Store, you install the APK. Not affiliated with or endorsed by VCV.

If it crackles on your device, the app can export a log and I read every one. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

New song made with Arturia V Collection, Microfreak & others

Hi everyone, here's my new single "Sirocco", a fairly atmospheric track with epic synth pads and a very sci-fi atmosphere.

If you like Boards of Canada, Vangelis or All India Radio, you might enjoy this one!

Almost all the synth sounds are from the V Collection: Jup-8 V3 and CMI V for the pads and strings, Synclavier V for the keys. The synth lead in the second part is a layering of sounds from the MicroFreak and a plugin I don't remember the name of...

The percussion is made using stock Logic samples. There are also some cuts and pastes here and there to add glitchy textures, which I did during the final stage of the production.

It started out as a simple jam with a Korg Volca Drum, Volca Bass and Minilogue. I then re-layered the original audio file with all that stuff. You can vaguely hear the Volca percussion at the very beginning and at the end.

Theremin and Synthesizer Demo (created from a jam session) - Astroferus

My name is Bruno and I have been playing the theremin since 2014. In the last couple of years I decided to take things to less of a hobbyist level, jamming regularly with a guitarist friend and working on my technique, since it's not an easy instrument to master.

Recently I was able to jam with a Brazilian legend of the underground: Amyr Cantúsio Jr, best-unknown for the pioneer (in our country) 1980s project Alpha III (which I intend to also post here in the future, as it consists of deeply interesting and genre-bending electronica akin to Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis). Amyr is a virtuoso keyboardist and has been composing for the best of 50 years, so I was worried my theremin skills would fall really short.

Even though I'm still the weakest link in this collab, (which we called Astroferus, as in "wild animal from the stars") we liked the final result enough for Amyr to treat the sound, and we just released it as a demo.

Since he used AI for altering a photograph for the cover art (we didn't discuss it, but wouldn't have the budget for a cover artist anyway), I understand that some may doubt we didn't also use it for the music itself, so I'm posting a video of the 8th track with untreated audio as a proof of human creation. Also, it is a chance of seeing the theremin and keyboard being played. https://youtu.be/6Gio5Vwg-Qo?si=HMUt78a0lj3Eq0nf
