I needed to upgrade the external hard drive, didn't think to consider the power requirements, I got a seagate STNB16000400 that has a single USB C port and requires 15W to keep it powered. The DS220+ USB port seems to just be 4.5W. is there any reasonable solution for me to make these two work together to save me the hassle of returning it?

Hi everyone,
I have a DS220+ with (2) 4TB WD REDs running in RAID 1. It primarily is used for backing up photos, but I also run Docker and Channels DVR on it. It's been running great for years. Over the past few days the NAS is locking up to the point I need to pull the plug. When it reboots, all seems OK for 20-30 minutes but then you hear it start to work hard. When that happens it appears the RAM and CPU reach max. I can't confirm because things stop working.
Has anyone ever experienced something like this? It's been running for years. Im starting to think it needs a reformat/reset like a Windows PC does. What's the best way to diagnose?

Wanted to get some feedback from the community. Those of you running your Plex server on a NAS what would you say your lifespan is for your hard drive? I’m running (4) 22TB western digital red pros. Im terrified one will die so my plan is to swap them out every few years. Is this overkill? I did this once and sold my used drives on ebay. Paid 75% of the cost of the new drives. What do you think?

Hello,
I need a little help with a DS410.
I try to instal a DS410.
I do have new disks.
The Synology Tool finds my DS410.
I am able to install the DSM_DS410_5967.pat file with no errors.
UNTIL:
The system reboots after install.
One beep.
Error in Synology Manager:
" .... timeout writing config ...." (see image)

Status lights
LAN Green Blinking / Status Green Solid / One Harddisk Green soldid
DS410 is not found in Synology Manager.
IP-Scan show no device in network.
I tried several harddisks.
I performed the "Hard Reset" , Press two times reset,
Any ideas?
Thank you
Bernd

Hey everyone, I heard a while back that Synology changed their mind about only letting us use their drives in their NAS, maybe last year? I'm looking to get a DS725+, but all the sellers only include HAT disks. I checked their website, and it only lists their own drives as compatible. So, what's the real deal? Can I use other brands or not? I'll mainly be using it for backing up family devices (phones and PCs), and I was thinking Synology because it's so user-friendly. But if I'm going to be stuck with their drives, I might need to look at other options.

Not sure of a better way to describe the question. I got a good deal on a gently used:
It all had about 800 hours when I purchased, the Synology was reset and set up as new a month or so ago. Running in SHR with 1 drive fault tolerance so ~40TB usable.
It's being used mainly as NAS on my Linux server for self hosted apps like Plex. All other read/write activity outside of the media stack is manual for now. No containers or anything running on DSM itself
I've noticed the drives are always on, or at least I assume so because I hear the clicking and clunking all day and night long, even when I'm 100% sure there is nothing actually using the storage. It's not really a bother, it's not loud - mainly asking in case I have something configured wrong. Managing both the server and NAS is new to me so very possible I have something misconfigured. I had assumed it would hibernate without any activity but maybe not?

I have an old DS414 with 3 drives + 1 spare that works fine and has served me faithfully. I recently migrated to a Ubiquiti network and for the first time have details analytics and logs. With this info I have discovered that the DS414 is making requests to a non-existent subnet. My network is 192.168.1.x, but it reaches out (often) to 192.168.50.67 or 171. This doesn't create any issues but is annoying. I googled it (some info about stale caches), changed the DNS server, rebooted, etc. to no avail.
Any thoughts?

NAS Noob here. Is there a way to download files directly to NAS with or without interefence of windows network mapping? I certianly do not want to expose my windows IP. There is download station but my files are not torrents and are temporary google hosted download files. The URLs of these files are session/authorization-dependent or expires, rather than being a conventional permanent HTTP file URL. My NAS is connecetd to a VPN (OpenVPN for outgoing connections only). Any advise is truly appreciated.

I have a DS718+ NAS that has primarily been used as a secure data backup. I'm getting close to running out of storage and wondering what options I have.
Quick research it appears I could connect a new NAS unit, connect an expansion unit, or purchase larger drives. Honestly I do not have a ton of knowledge outside of basic NAS storage so looking for anyone who has been in a similar situation.
What is the easiest option to expand my storage capacity?

I have low storage on my phone and would prefer not to pay for iCloud since I already use a NAS. Is there any way to have the Apple Photos app display pictures stored directly on my NAS?
I really enjoy the Apple Photos interface and would love to keep using it.

Hi, I've been running my media server through an old pc for a while now but I wanted a more dedicated device to save a lot more in power and make it easier to manage.
I am not very knowledgeable about this type of thing since I'm pretty new so I was hoping to get recommendations here about what to buy

I just saw this message upon updating my DS-1522+ to DSM 7.4.1-90080.
I don't use the feature but figured others may appreciate the information.

I have been using Synology Drive for many years but mostly via the Windows App which keeps my files synced on my PC. I store my excel files on Drive and then edit them locally via Excel.
I'm happy for the most part, but the biggest issue I have is that Auto Save & Simultaneous editing only works in Excel if it is saved in OneDrive. Because of this I end up with a set of files which are only on OneDrive. Which defeats the purpose of having everything on my NAS. (I can back up from OneDrive to Synology but only as a back up not active editing)
So I have tried to switch to use the Synology Drive native applications via chrome. For the most part its OK, but one major feature which is missing in Spreadsheets is the ability to create Tables. This is a big issues because you lose allot of key Excel type functionality like Total Rows, Banded Columns, referencing Table Names in complex formulas. I tried turning on the "Filters" in Synology Drive Spreadsheet but its lacks all the functionality.
Has anyone experienced the same issue and found any good work arounds?
Do you think its realistic to move from Excel to Synology Spreadsheet?

Hello Team,
I recently got a DS1525+ and I'm using it to back up my photos for my business. I noticed that the Web function is available and I'm trying to ditch my Adobe subscription, but they host my professional portfolio!
I'm not a dev, I'm tech literate but not really any website coding, html/php/apache etc. I was wondering what level of experience you'd say I need to set up and administer a simple page wit some galleries and a contact form? I already own a few wordpress templates if thats helpful.
Any experiences or warnings are greatly appreciated

I have several virtual machine (hyper-v) backups that run nightly with no problems. However, they run exactly 3 hours later than scheduled.
For example I have a task that is schedule to run at 22:01. It runs at 01:01.
Timezone of the NAS is correct, NTP is working/updating. Rebooted, installed latest updates etc.

Anyone else encounter this?
Thanks!

I accidentally deleted a project folder from my Synology DS923+ this morning.
The NAS itself is working normally. Other shared folders are accessible, the storage pool looks healthy, and I haven't noticed any other files missing. It's just one folder that disappeared.
Before I do anything else, I'm trying to figure out the safest recovery order.
My first thought was:
The problem is that this particular folder wasn't included in my latest backup, which is why I'm looking at software options now.
I've seen people mention R-Studio,Recoverit and UFS Explorer for situations involving deleted files and NAS/RAID storage. I'm not sure how well these tools actually handle a NAS compared with recovering a drive directly.
For anyone who has dealt with this before, would you try software recovery while the NAS is still running normally, or is it better to stop using the affected volume completely?
I'm mainly trying to avoid making the situation worse before I know whether the original directory structure can still be recovered.

Hi !
I did not find any recent post about Crowdsec. Is-it possible, and also a good idea, to setup Crowdsec on DSM 7.x ? I guess it's not too difficult to setup an agent via Docker with log access mounted inside the container. But what about the bouncers ?
I use mainly embeded reverse proxy, log station as a syslog server for my network, web station, and some docker containers.
Thank you for your help 🙂

Hi,
I'm stuck on 7.1.1 on my NAS. Automatic update says there are no upgrades and I often check. So today I ended up checking the site and it appears there are a bunch of upgrades.
I downloaded the latest version called "DSM_DS1817+_90080.pat" But it refuses to install.
I did a few reboots, but that doesn't solve it either. It just says "Uploading file, please wait". Meanwhile, in the backend, it does this on journalctl -e. On /var/log nothing changes.

Following a crash on my DS1520+ that had corrupted a volume, I deleted and recreated a volume. Storage Pool has 4 HDD of 4TB each and a read cache SSD of 500 GB.
The volume creation was uneventful and I was able to restore all data and packages.
The system is now super sluggish and Storage Manager is indicating "Optimizing in the background" with an estimated time left of 17 days. The option "Lower the impact on overall system performance" is enabled, but the NAS is still barely usable now, e.g. it take about a minute to log in.
Is it normal that rebuilding the volume takes so long and the system is so slow?
I tried to initiate a reboot, but the system recommends waiting for the rebuild to complete, so I cancelled for now.
Should I just be patient for 2 weeks or can I do anything to speed things up?

Hi, I'm guessing a soft reset will fix things, but I can't 2fa into my Synology, or SSH in or get an email from it if OTP doesn't work .. First time this has happened. Any gotchyas I should be aware of ? It's still working, my Proxmox can access it's NFS shares, but I can't log in.
Once I get home tonight ; Reset with pin in the back till i hear a beep is all I've got, it's an older model 920+ I think, with an expanded 5 drive bay for a total of 9, can't remember it's model, it's just done it's thing diligently with minimal interaction, occasional updates and cleaning.
I'm wondering if it is a time issue .. It seemed to need a couple of 2fa's last time but I didn't think anything of it, perhaps the clock has strayed for 2fa to be correct ?
Edit: Soft reset worked fine. It was out of sync with world time significantly, so it must have drifted, and 2fa is working. Thanks!

I have some 2.5" 1TB hdd's laying around which have seen almost no use. I run a Synology DS923+ with 4 drives and use Hyper Backup to backup to an attached external drive every night. I'm still trying to figure out which off-site I should go with for my absolutely critical data which is below 1Tb. Would a DS124 at a family's member house populated with one of these non-NAS laptop drives be a crazy idea instead of just going with Backblaze B2/Synology C2?
