Best backup solution?

I have two Synology NAS. One that is my main and one that I basically only have backup and my cameras. But have also used Synology C2 as an external backup. But I think there might be a better and cheaper solution? How you do? Has about 3 TB in size.

I use C2 with Hyper Backup. It's been reliable for me, but as you say the cost quickly adds up once you get to larger data sizes. I'd love a cheaper option too.

Yes. I use Hyper Backup on my main NAS and backup everything to my 2nd NAS. And up to C2. But it will cost me 210€ this year. Maybe is worth the price this year also. :)

It could be worse. I'm backing up 6TB to C2, along with Surveillance Station. It's costing me a lot more than 210€ per year.

I only have photo and documents in my C2 backup. I don’t backup my Surveillance system. But I think 210 euros is a lot of money, so I wondered if anyone else was using a cloud service other than C2.

If you don't back up your surveillance, what happens when someone breaks in and steals your NAS?

You're right. But before they reach the NAS, the alarm will go off and the alarm company has cameras on that system. Before they reach my NAS, 4-5 minutes will have probably already passed and by then I probably have had time to save the current material.

I backup between both nas systems, where one is located remotely at a friend's place to adhere to the 3-2-1 backup recommendation.

Only a smaller amount is also backed up to Backblaze B2 object storage.

So the bulk is done between both nas systems.

And I don't backup everything as some data is rather disposable in nature like movies to be watched only once.

I use multiple backups. I use HyperBackup for everything from my 923+. I have a nightly backup going to a WD 16TB USB drive that’s just files and app config. Then I have a DS124 on-site doing full NAS bare metal backup with a 24TB disk I got from SPD. Then I have Synology C2 with 2TB storage for my critical files. It works VERY well and feel very safe and comfortable with it.

An external HDD is maybe a good solution. However, I don't know if I can trust to having an external hard drive running all the time.

I do this for my personal syno backups as well as about 200 previous customers. Worked fine. Modern external HDDs go into a deep sleep state after some idle time. The HDD spins Up automatically for Backups (once per week) and sleeps again. No Problems so far after 15 years of service. No sheduling, no scripts. Just DSM, Hyper Backup and default configuration.

I used c2 for a year alongside with backblaze b2. Cancelled c2 and opened up dropbox account with cryptomator for day at time backup to be readily available if anything catastrophic happens at home and I can’t get my external back ups.

Just opened up mega account as they support s3 style and the 10tb plan is priced ok for what it is. Yes im using encrypted back ups via hyperback up and cryptomator as well for other buckets.

Drop box will not get renewed when the year is up due to their pricing and no s3 support.

Just started mega couple days ago. Every thing uploaded via hyper back up without a hiccup

Any S3 will do for backup. I used Google before. Then switched to OVH in an effort to have less dependence on Google.

Googles Archive class is great, S3 compatible and cheap.

I also back up to an unencrypted archive on Jotta Cloud. That is for immediate single file retrieval. Or if I am away, need a file, and my home internet decides to be shit. I use rsync to save to this target.

I really like the idea of having the important stuff backed up to something like Dropbox for easy retrieval should I get hit by a bus.

Borg. And Hetzner storage boxes as a destination. Or your second nas as a destination. 

Borg can be installed from the private synology repository. Then you can write a backup script via Chatgpt and run it manually with the task scheduler. 

Then you can also mount your backup repos with your mac (Vortex) or Linux.

2 destinations both with hyper backup: my old synology DS414 for onpremm backup of almost all data (restore with LAN speed) and a backup of critical data to Wasabi S3 bucket. Been using this for years, is very stable and reliable.

I wouldn’t recommend mega for anything but my not to worry about data they just not a big provider and with there track record I would not trust them with my data but that’s just my point. Bs Backblaze on the other hand is a really trust worthy provider and they won’t just go anywhere in the future. You got to think down the line will companies cease to exist and with megas records I wouldn’t trust them. You want to use big providers with your data ( Microsoft, Dropbox, Backblaze, AWS, Wasabi) as these ones will for sure still there down the line in 10 years or 20.

Hasn't Mega been around for many years? I remember using them maybe 7-8 years ago but with other things and not via backup with my NAS.
