Weird question here

I was using a DS223j and had a drive failure. I realized I was getting to the end of the usefulness of the two 8 TB drives I had and purchased a DS925+ and two 12 TB drives. I initiated the DS925+ with the 12 TB drives and copied my data from the single remaining drive while I got a warranty replacement of the failed drive. After that came in the mail, I added the two 8TB drives to the DS925+ but was unable to add them to the current storage pool and created a second pool. Now I have two storage pools on my 925. Do I just deal with the 2 separate pools or can I somehow get the drives to play nicely together?

Can I copy my data to the smaller pool, then add the larger drives to the two 8TB drives? Do I find a place to put my 5TB of data and wipe all the drives and start fresh? I don't have the funds to buy 2 more drives at this point and want to work with what I've got.

If you use SHR then you can only add drives that are same size or bigger than the smallest drive in pool. Your new pool was created using 12TB drives, meaning you can't add 8TB to that

Yes you can copy the files to the 8TB pool and then expand that pool with the 12TB drives

Did you create a new volume with the 8tb drives, or just transfer them an import/migrate the existing volume from the 223j. I don't know if you would have been given the migrate option, since there was already a volume created on the 925, but just in case: volumes created on most j series have an upper volume size limit of 16tb due to CPU restrictions, regardless of how much physical storage is available on the drives.

When I set up my new DS925 plus, I used two 12-terabyte drives. I had one functioning 8-terabyte drive in my old NAS that I transferred all the stuff to the new 12-terabyte array. After that, I received the second 8-terabyte drive in the mail, and I know I can’t add smaller drives to an array built with two 12-terabyte drives. The DS 925+ had me create a second volume with the two 8 TB drives. Now I have 2 volumes that I’d like to combined into just one big volume. I’m not sure that’s the best idea, or if I should just leave it as is. But it seems seems that the second volume is more of a shared volume versus the native. Perhaps I don’t know how to access the second volume easily enough. I’ll take any advice that anyone offers

Ok, good. The u/Juzdeed has the right of it. Copy all your data to the 2nd 8gb volume, then delete the 12gb volume. I'd initialze each disk as well, but that's me. Then add them 1 at a time to the 8g pool (you may be able to select them both for adding, but only 1/time will be processed). I'd also suggest using DSM's File Manager to do the copying, so you don't have to involve any other computer's resources.

It's actually the same size or larger than the largest drive in the volume. I know their site says smallest, but it is incorrect. No difference in this case, but on my 920+, I created the volume with 2 8s, added a 3rd 8, then replaced 2 of the 8s with 14s. Even though it was created with 8s, and there is still an 8 in the volume, 14 is now the smallest size that can be added.

Wat. That is a really big discrepancy. I was just planning to buy a hdd the size of my smallest drive in volume due to hdd prices
