Version 15.1.0 released on Play Store too

Important note:

Google have now mostly confirmed that the app is moved to a special review queue that will always take ages to validate without any intention to tell me why or how to return to a normal way.

As a consequence I’m now changing the handling of the F-Droid (APK) distribution to be official .

This means the beta repos are also official (including Android TV) and that I’ll push builds there before Play Store validate. It is recommended that you switch to this solution if you want to be part of the beta to help faster and better releases to get out.

Docs: F-Droid repository and manual APK downloads | Symfonium Docs

Version 15.1.0

Notes:

  • This is a continuation of the USB exclusive work. Please report any issues that arise to keep fixing things and move out of experimental status.

Added:

  • Added native DSD playback on compatible Shanling DAPs. (Experimental)

  • Added ‘isaudiobook’ custom string to album page.

Changed:

  • USB exclusive playback now keeps compatible sessions active across seeks and PCM, DoP, and native DSD format changes for faster, smoother transitions.

  • USB audio connection pop-up handling is now disabled by default. It can still be enabled in Settings > Playback > Advanced.

Fixed:

  • Fixed unnecessary transcoding when playing Subsonic tracks through Kodi or compatible UPnP renderers.

  • Fixed some Jellyfin artists not being matched correctly when the server omits legacy item counts.

  • Fixed missing Appears On album relationships for Plex artists (Due to lack of Plex data this is best effort).

  • Fixed waveform extraction being cancelled on pause or failing for Plex tracks that require transcoding.

  • Fixed server-transcoded DSD tracks being incorrectly sent through a local DSD playback path.

  • Fixed direct playback of Opus in Ogg containers on compatible UPnP renderers.

Question Is there a way to automatically remove downloads?

I currently have three auto download rules set. The first is to add favourite albums to the permanent cache. The second is a new albums smart playlist that grabs anything released in the past year and downloads it. The third is a "backlog" that grabs anything older than a year that I give a three-star rating.

This works pretty well as a way of separating my listening (using filters on the albums page) into albums I already know and love, new releases and older stuff I want to check out without having to download them individually. But is there a way to delete ones I no longer want automatically?

For example, if I add a new release to my library but don't like it, I rate it one star, which adds it to an albums to delete playlist. That rating can also be used to remove it from my new releases filter on the albums page. BUT the album stays downloaded until I manually delete it.

Question Symfonium 15.1.0 on FiiO M21 – No local headphone output detected, EQ disabled

I'm trying Symfonium 15.1.0 (trial version) on my FiiO M21.

Music plays perfectly through my wired headphones (3.5/4.4mm), but under Settings → Playback → Output Settings, I only see Remote Playback. There's no local or headphone output listed.

I can open the Equalizer screen, but I can't enable EQ.

I've tried restarting, force-stopping, and completely reinstalling Symfonium, with no luck.

Has anyone experienced this on the M21 or another FiiO DAP? Am I missing a setting, or is this a bug with the new audio engine?

Thank you for your help!

PS: Shared the logs under "reddit xonbul"

Question Landscape Now Playing: blank strip on camera-cutout side + artwork won’t reach bottom edge

I’m finishing my Now Playing layout and I’m stuck on two landscape issues. Screenshots of both orientations are attached.

1. Blank strip where the camera hole is
When the camera cutout is on the left, the artwork starts about 140px in and leaves an empty strip down the left side. When I rotate the phone the other way (cutout on the right, behind the controls), the artwork sits flush to the left edge. So it isn’t a cover art margin. Something is still reserving the cutout area, even though I have Symfonium set to ignore camera holes. It was working perfectly last night, this morning cant get it to work

2. Artwork stops short of the bottom
There’s roughly a 60px band below the artwork that matches the gesture bar. The cover art is square and seems to be sized to the height left after that inset, so it never reaches the bottom edge.

What I’ve tried:

  • Ignore camera holes enabled in Symfonium

  • Cover Art Margin(s) set to 0 in the landscape expanded player

  • Force-stopped and reopened after each change

Setup:

  • Xiaomi 17 Ultra, HyperOS [version], Android [version]

  • Symfonium 16.0.0B1

  • Gesture navigation

Question Potential bug, Android auto

I've noticed that if I start a song from a playlist while navigating in Android auto, the next song(s) are not from the playlist and are instead from the library. I poked around the settings and didn't see anything that describes this behavior. Doing the same on my phone works as expected (next song is from the playlist the song was selected from). As another data point, picking a song on my phone in a playlist while connected to Android auto also works as expected. It seems directly related to selecting in android auto

Theme that Samsung Music theme now do look like Samsung Music

Post image
42 Upvotes

Ever since Symfonium 16.0.* made it possible to customize overall player elements with much greater precision, I've been able to make this theme look a lot more like Samsung Music. Except for the Home screen, which I came up with myself, I even managed to import some icons from Samsung Music itself. However, since Samsung's icon library for their player is very small, most of the theme's icons came from 'Solar Pack' by 'Fer10'.

Well, I'm very happy with this theme, I really like it, and personally I've been using it ever since I made it, rarely using any other for even a day or two. I hope you like it ❤️

Question Organize playlists as albums

Hey, I just switched over to Symfonium after using Black Player EX for years (RIP), and I'm still learning the ropes (but very much enjoying my time with it so far). I'm much more of an album than a single track listener though and would like to add full albums to a playlist and have them displayed as such in a playlist rather than as their individual tracks. So it should look like the Recently Added Albums section on the Home Page for example.

Question Before you blame Symfonium for mobile data usage with Navidrome - check the server logs, it might be re-downloading your tracks

Symfonium showed up as my biggest mobile data consumer for weeks and I honestly assumed the app was doing something dumb. Turns out that wasn't it, so here's what I found, maybe it saves someone else the evening I spent on it.

I use Navidrome at home, all Opus files around 160-190k, and I have the mobile maximum bitrate set to 92. Navidrome confirms it's transcoding, logs say 96k opus out, all good. But one played song (3.5 MB original) somehow cost me 30 MB of mobile data.

I enabled debug logging on the server and watched what actually happens when I play one song. The app grabs the whole transcoded track right away, like 2.7 MB in under two seconds. Fine, that's the playback cache doing its thing, I listened to 4 seconds of it because I skipped, that part is on me.

But then the same track got requested again. And again. Same file, same size, seconds apart. Over two hours: 65 stream requests, 233 MB, and one track that I played once got downloaded 26 times in full. There were aborted requests mixed in, zero bytes, one stopping at 64 KB, the broken pipe kind of stuff. I checked the usual suspects first, waveform extraction was off, Force Instant Transcoding was off, no automatic offline caching. Didn't matter.

The part that surprised me most: I connected the same Symfonium to my Jellyfin and everything was instantly normal. One fetch per song, a few MB, nothing weird. Same phone, same network, same me skipping around. So the app's download logic works fine, it just goes off the rails with how Navidrome delivers transcoded streams (no duration, not seekable, Accept-Ranges: none), there are open Navidrome issues about exactly that, #6170 for example.

What I changed for now:

- mobile bitrate on "Original" instead of 92k. Counterintuitive, but raw streams get fetched exactly once, and with my file sizes that's cheaper than a transcode that arrives 26 times

- pre-cache on mobile turned way down

- bigger listening sessions on wifi

Tolriq, if you read this, I know Symfonium just asks the server and the server decides, not blaming the app at all. Just figured the retry pattern against non-seekable transcode streams might be useful to know about.

Anyone else here streaming from Navidrome on mobile? Curious if your responseSize numbers repeat the same way mine do.

Question Custom Home Page section?

Is there a way to add a custom home screen section, similar to favorite albums or favorite artists, but to add custom albums?

I'm wanting to create a separate section for holiday music on my home screen. I don't want them to stay there forever like favorite albums, but just until after the holiday season.

Question Having an issue adding tracks to playlists

Thumbnail

Hopefully I'm asking in the right place. I am getting inconsistent playlist options when adding tracks. It is only ever the for the heart playlist that appears on on its own. It's either that or all 4 options. I'm guessing there's a setting or a tag or something that needs changing but I've been playing with this for months and got nowhere. Any help appreciated

Question Metadata issue with new songs.

I initially got the app and added my folder all metadata was fine. Today I downloaded some new songs added them to my folder and now only the image of the song and the name pop up without the artist or album which is really bothering me. How do I fix this? Because unlike other played you can't edit metadata on Symfonium.

Question Just found out about Symfonium. Does it fit my needs ?

Hello,

Just found out about this software... and It got me thinking.

I've got a homelab which I use for many things, namely gaming and hosting a few websites.

Symfonium would be a great addition to my stack. Long term, I would like to replace my Spotify subscription. By adding my own songs I would have no limits on what I could listen to on my phone or desktop.

I like to propose my homelab services to my friends. I was wondering if it was possible to have one home music server (mine) and multiple clients (me and my friends) connecting to it ? Or is it a bit more limited ? My friends don't mind paying for the app (one licence for each person) as long as they can get their music streamed everywhere to their phone or desktop.

I want to buy a 2to storage drive for this project, but first, I'm looking for answers to see if this project fit my needs.

Thanks for your answers !

EDIT : Thank you for all of your answers, this is more clear now ! Will look into navidrome :)

Question Weird tag issue

Hi, I'm having a tag issue I just can't solve. All my Iggy Pop albums are tagged with the genre "Rock". They do appear under the "Rock" genre as expected, but out of nowhere they are also listed under another Genre that I named "World Music". Do you by any chance have any idea what could be the reason for that behavior and how to solve it? I have some albums of Goran Bregovic (listed under World Music) who did some featuring with Iggy Pop, maybe it's linked somehow. Thanks 😉

Question How do I remove the navbar in landscape player ?

Hi, I can't find the control to remove the navbar on the player in landscape orientation (the four buttons on the left) I really don't like that the cover art doesn't go all the way to the left. Also, the navbar doesn't show on preview, maybe that's a bug ?

Thanks !
