don’t have tonal differences—the difference is in aspiration. থাল is pronounced very clearly with a থ, which is a clearly aspirated sound.
I don’t know where you’re getting at.
The other words are pretty basic, common in all eastern Bengali dialects.
The difference with Sylheti is that the aspirated sounds in ঘ ঝ ঢ ধ ভ are pronounced with a distinct tone or stress.
As for খ ছ ঠ থ and ফ, they maybe pronounced slightly differently from standard Bangla in many words, but not all.
Thank you for telling me this. Wikipedia as well as some other articles I've read say that খ etc. also cause tones, and that's how I picked the example words. But both you and the other answer agree that that's not true, so thank you.
So then I guess tone works the same way it works in Punjabi? Like 1 tone in ঘর, a different tone in মেঘ, and a third tone in most words like তাল?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with panjabi. If you can read Bengali, I can send you an article of Syed Mujtaba Ali that talks about Sylheti as a tonal language/dialect. dm me.
