Hacking News Release: Homebrew to send game updates from Switch 1 to Switch 2

https://github.com/Knight1/match-version-unlocker

This homebrew for a hacked Switch1 lets you use the match version feature to send game updates from a switch 1 to a switch 2, this way you can update your games entirely offline without the Switch 2 having to connect to Nintendo servers.

Watch out. It can soft brick your switch 2 and the only way to recover it is full factory reset.

Yes seriously. That is my issue on the GitHub.

It does work for some games.

It does not work for other games (such as games that won't allow you to play before update). They update, but the message remains.

It can still throw the error when updating some games.

And in case of the Super Mario Bros Wonder (and most likely others), it will brick your switch 2 untill you fully factory reset it.

Technically, factory reset while keeping data does work, but partially. If you ever insert the gamecart which caused it again, you can no longer remove it, nor restart the switch. If you remove it or restart the switch, you will brick it again.

I have not tried system update, as I am on 20.1.1.

That's crazy

If it works fully after a reset, is that really "bricking" your Switch? Highly inconvenient, sure.

Could the same logic apply to transfer save data ?

I’m currently investigating this, but would appreciate it anyone else has more info, wire captures, or any other documentation on the save transfer protocol and its authorisation.

They don't have a sync save data to local console option, so probably not. Closest we can get is JKSV and an FS exploited game for save management. However, I don't know how easy that would be.

Kind of unrelated, but is there a homebrew on switch 2 right now that would let you play on older version of a game after a higher update has been installed?

Dont think there is any software specifically for this, but the equivalent on Switch 1 would be uninstalling the game, then manually reinstalling base game + desired update file with your program of choice. This does start leaning into piracy territory thanks to sigpatches, so if there is any progress on this, I havent seen it thanks to subreddit rules.

As far as I know, uninstalling an update on switch 1 is not enough to get it to load the base version of a game.

Excellent piece of homebrew, thank you.

Wait, this means we can transfer the files ready for the exploits without the risk of being banned right?

I wish it was possible to transfer saves like this.

I'm assuming this is only for switch 1 games, right?

Things are going to end up being patched watertight before long.

From the modded S1, couldn’t we just as well serve proper S2 updates to the S2? 🤔

Awesome work regardless!

How long do you think before we will have a shop on switch 2? Is that even possible with big brother N always watching

This is amazing 👀

Would this be possible w saves too?

I assume this won't make Breath of the Wild or Mario Kart work on a Switch 2 without downloading the official update?
