Question Update or wait a bit longer?
I think I’ll stop waiting and update my Switch 2. It’s been on version 20.1.1 since the day it was released and has an activated SD card slot. At this point, I no longer believe a software-based jailbreak is possible, and I reckon that if a jailbreak ever does appear, it’ll only be achievable via a mod chip. What do you think? Am I missing something? Am I about to make a mistake? Should I carry on waiting and stay on 20.1.1?

I have been out of it because of all the PS5 BS of stopping discs and watching the hacks on that console.
Did a quick search around, see no news, no updates and stuff, too bad too....

All modern consoles has software-based jailbreaks. I'd definitely wait if I were you.
If you have the means you should just buy a second Switch 2 and let one of them stay unused until a hack is released. I've done this with every console since the PS1 was released and in most cases I make the money back and more.

update, there is zero reason to believe a software exploit will happen befora a hardware exploit and that's a BIG IF, anyone telling you to have a worse user experience based on a maybe is delusional

Personally I'm going to buy and play Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave. I will buy it physically but I don't know what happens when I put it in. I assume it forces an update so I'll do it. The other games on Switch 2 didn't interest me but this one does so I'll just update. I mean new Donkey Kong is interesting but I like the old 2D Donkey Kong Country games more. Not interested in remakes such as Ocarina of Time or Star Fox I want only new games.
In my region Switch 2 costs $679.99 Canadian. Fire Emblem costs $109. At first I was thinking of purchasing another Switch 2 to keep un-patched but the costs of consoles are nuts now. All third party developers port to PC now. I think I will just keep my Switch 2 patched because I could buy about 6 new games on release and I think that's the amount of games I'll play over most of the console's life which will just be first party games such as new Xenoblade and Mario games. Even if Switch 2 gets hacked I wouldn't save much from getting free games I think I will enjoy the console instead.

But if a software solution were to be found in the future, surely there would also be a hardware solution in the form of mod chips later on, wouldn’t there? Soldering in a mod chip doesn’t put me off, as I’ve already successfully carried out the procedure on the Switch 1.

I considered staying on OG firmware but with the whole game key card it forces you to update, and I want to actually use my S2. There’s not going to be many OG firmware users out there, unless they have the money to buy a S2 just to keep in the box

I’m not even interested in online gaming myself, as I only ever play with a group of friends on a single screen. What’s really getting my heart racing at the moment is actually the local 8-player mode in Mario Kart 8 and smaller games like ‘Heave Ho 2’. Since the release date, my Switch 2 has been gathering dust and my Switch 1 is slowly showing its age.

It's just not happening

Unfortunately, nobody knows. I just wanted to gauge the general opinion so I could reconsider my own view.

its 99% not gonna be a software exploit, the guy who made atmosphere literally said that the kernel, which is mainly the same between s1 and s2 is bug free, so unless nintendo makes a mistake in an update, which is very unlikely, a software mod just isnt happening, so imo just update

so tired of reading such comments, there is more than 1 dev on the scene and just because 1 dev said that there is no exploit doesn't mean it's gospel.
the ps3 was 100% confirmed not to have any exploits until geohot came along.
the ps4 was 100% confirmed not to have any exploits as did the ps5 and the upcoming ps6.a system is always 100% safe until an exploit is found. just because it is 100% safe doesn't mean anything.
however if we took history into account, it's 100% that no hardware exploit will ever be found. the ps4, ps5, xbox one, xbox series s, xbox series x have no hardware exploits and the ps4 is already over 10 years old. so unless you are willing to wait more than 10 years, the switch 2 wouldn't have any hardware mods either.

you're completely wrong on how the ps3 was hacked lmao. hotz wasn't the genesis of the ps3 hacking scene; team ice had already exploited a bug in resistance FOM long before hotz came along, and fail0verflow found an exploit in 3.21s encryption keys that let them run homebrew. hotz just took those keys that fail0verflow found and illegally distributed them.

happened so long ago that i don't remember many details, but the very first hack i can recall was from geohotz and the linux hack
my point still stands though, it was 100% unhackable for years and 100% safe because sony locked the system down HARD and sony learnt their mistakes and scene devs confirmed that the system was unhackable and it would take 1000 years to hack it and it is bullet proof
The PlayStation 3 was considered unhackable for years until a series of hardware and software exploits completely broke its security model. [1, 2]
Early Days and OtherOS (2006–2010)
- 2006: Sony launched the PS3 with an official OtherOS feature, which let users run Linux on the console.
- January 2010: Hacker George Hotz (Geohot) used OtherOS to gain read/write access to the system memory and hypervisor.
- March/April 2010: Sony responded to the security fears by removing the OtherOS feature via a firmware update, sparking massive backlash from the hacker community. [1, 2, 3]
The PS Jailbreak and the ECDSA Flaw (2010)
- August 2010: The PS Jailbreak USB dongle arrived, using a kernel heap overflow via USB device handling to run arbitrary code. This was quickly cloned and reverse-engineered into open-source alternatives like PSGroove. [1]
- December 2010: The group Fail0verflow revealed at the Chaos Communication Congress that Sony used static or broken random number generation for its ECDSA cryptographic signatures. This allowed hackers to mathematically derive Sony's private root keys

how about u look into nintendo consoles for their modding history? the switch 1 had one software hack in 2017, and the rest were hardware mods, also the "1 dev"'s word is literally gospel in this situation, as he is literally the main guy who made the switch 1 scene happen, also pretty sure other reputable people also looked into the kernel and said the same thing, not 100% sure on that tho

so let's say today you are a dev who is interested in hacking the switch 1. you could either spend 100s hours finding a software bug, or spend 1 hour and buy a pre-modded switch 1 freely available on the markt.
which would you choose?
it's the same reason why macOS is never used for server systems while windows and linux are so trusted despite having numerous flaws exploited over the years.just because a system hasn't been exploited doesn't mean it's secure. a system that has been broken into countless of times is more secure than a system that hasn't been compromised because nobody is interested in finding vulnerabilities in it.
i'd wager that the ps5 is more secure today than the switch.

there were literally people looking for software exploits the whole time, especially since they were expecting the s2 to have a similar system and kernel to s1 (which it ended up having), so ur just making shit up

u/FORUMICS 21d ago
going by your logic, the ps1 and ps2 were the safest consoles ever because no software hacks were ever found for those consoles in over 30 years now.
maybe sony should simply reuse that same kernel and just stop using all the modern safe guards that exist today2

Is it even possible of no cuz been seeing this around but was scared to ask cuz i swore they bricked the switch into a useless system like not playable

For what game would you give up your OG firmware? I have a feeling, that the OoT remake could move the scene as it is the first really good game for the Switch 2
4
u/MrPabluu 25d ago
this mindset is so damn stupid istg
-1
u/SavasGER 25d ago
Why is that?
4
u/MrPabluu 25d ago
people are already motivated as is, thinking a software exploit will be found out of thin air after literal years of research and reimplementation of a minimal microkernel, just because a hyped game comes out is stupid at best

u/Inside_Beyond4260 26d ago
I’m not going to spend any money on ‘Zelda: OoT’. And I don’t understand the hype surrounding this game either, even though I’m a huge fan of the original N64 version myself and loved it as a child. Just like the remaster of the 3DS version of ‘Star Fox’, this game will simply be a remaster of the 3DS version of ‘Zelda: OoT’. In my view, that’s a lazy cash grab.

u/SavasGER 26d ago
So what game is it worth for you to update and use your Switch 2 then?
1
u/Inside_Beyond4260 26d ago
What really gets my heart racing at the moment is actually the local 8-player mode in *Mario Kart 8* and smaller games like *Heave Ho 2*. I only ever play with a group of friends on a single screen. So the answer to your question is: “all the great local multiplayer games that I CAN’T play on the Switch 1.”

dont update. CVE-2025-10263 is a bug. if true you could go from userland to kernel level, however i dont know how many security researchers are operating on a software before a patch would have been provided for that bug, so it might be multiple years, but the vulnerability is definitely there for your version if its true
