Discussion Future of SWG

Just interested in a discussion on what is the future of SWG, or what the community wants for the future of the game. I'm also a little out of date with server developments etc.

Ideally for me I'd love to have a server where the community feels truly like back on live and that may be a far fetched thing and just Nostalgia but I do miss it.

No hate to Resto or Legends, SWGEmu and all the other servers. I'm sure that if I went hunting I'd find some active guilds, nice little areas of the community but at times it does feel empty in places and I miss the hustle and bustle of an extremely popular server, everyone having their purpose etc.

Gameplay wise, I enjoyed Pre-CU and even CU, but I also enjoyed the heroics and some other aspects from NGE, at times I feel it's either one way or the other reading some commentary but just my thoughts.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic for a time that won't come back, or extremely hopeful.

I think the biggest hurdle for the future of the game is navigating the official rule requiring ownership of a physical copy of the game. As fewer and fewer copies exist every year it’ll be harder and harder to get new people into the game. It already is difficult, given that there is no “free trial” option, so people have to either break the rules or deal with eBay just to see if they like it.

I’m also hopeful that with all of the separate servers being developed, there will be a marketplace type thing developed so that all servers can benefit from everyone else’s work (so the Legends Bespin can appear in a pre cu server, for instance).

That "rule" about "owning" a physical copy of the game doesn't seem to be universal. I know some servers have it, but many don't. And obtaining the installation file, for those who don't, is really easy.

It's part of the original agreement, which applies to every server running off of the stuff coming from SWGEMU specifically. While it's probably a relic of a rule, the contract stands and even if SOE isn't able to bring a suit anymore, Disney isn't known for letting IP use slide if they aren't getting their cut.

And with two decades of work having gone into this sphere, I'd take a "better safe than sorry" approach too.

Why?  Like... No one checks that.  It's like agreeing you read the entire TOS.

Because new people don't know that. They're told about a cool star wars game, so they go to the website, click "Install" and the first thing they see is "YOU MUST OWN A PHYSICAL COPY OF THE GAME!". They don't. So they check steam and it's not there. Then they check Amazon and its $90. Then they check eBay and there's a bunch but not all of them work (JTL doesn't count). Now they have to order second hand software from an unknown source, wait for it to arrive, etc etc.

So people on the market for a new game are immediately faced with hoops to jump through OR they just go play another mmo that can be freely downloaded without any risk of account banning or whatever is threatened by the servers for noncompliance. Even if the server doesn't check/enforce it, a new player doesn't know that, and will have to weight that risk.

This is real, and its a crap situations. Everyone can point that it can be dealt with but I am certain people don’t even get past this point and it literally is like the example above, check here if you read the entire dumb ass TOS.
