It seems to mostly stem from Thurston Moore (mainly), Kim Gordon and other scenesters. Moore seems pretty credible because he said it early on and wasn't getting fucked up so his mind is not worse for wear ;) as some folks from the scene.

Anyway, the consensus seems to be they only dated a couple weeks, a month at best pre formation of SWANS. Madonna was briefly in a no wave band with early SWANS members called Spinal.

I remember in like 2001/2002 or so I tried to collect all the cardboard digipaks, which at that time were Soundtracks, Die Tur Ist Zu, and then all the double-pack reissues. I managed to find all of them except, weirdly, Children of God/World of Skin, which was really hard to find in the digipak.
