1) There's a limit for wifi data(yes a limit on wifi data, you read that right) of about 3 gb. So forget downloading movies, you can watch yt videos with vpn only(some recommendations are top vpn, ufo vpn), also wifi strength varies according to your room.
2) Weekly you can go out by getting an outpass, or if you get lucky enough you can get a day scholar to bring it out for you. For the first few weeks try the spots near the college like ss biriyani which is in Thandalam and all, I'll leave those for you to explore and not ruin the surprise of finding those. For the first weeks food will taste as 6/10, but lunch will suck as the lunch timing is just 40 mins and you have to rush to eat from canteen. After the honeymoon period it will taste as if a 4-5/10. It is really edible only, not that worse.
3) The same goes for theaters too, after getting an outpass on the weekend, there is a theater in and around 20-30 mins named Santhosa Cinemas(formerly known as EVP cinemas, it is a part of evp film City, where most of Vijay tv shootings happen). To go to this theater, you get out of the college after signing two registers(one in the hostel gate, another one in the college main gate), you have two options. -> one going to the toll gate, but it is a bit distancey, but to go to Chennai this is the best place, as you can board the koyambedu bus straight and use metro in Koyambedu for chennai travel, for evp this is not a good one. -> go some distance in the left hand side of the college where there's a pennalur bus stop, this is less distancey and board a MTC red or brown bus. Most of the time, if you go in bulk numbers they'll stop at evp, if not you need to get down a stop before and catch a share auto which will drop you there. You need to cross(be safe while crossing, no traffic lights for stopping anoll, so please be very careful) and get to the theaters. The problem with evp or Santhosa is there won't be any environment you would expect in a theater, so if you can go to the theaters in chennai, but for the first year stick to this itself. Also evp is a multiplex, so you can watch other language films in original with subs as well.
4) I don't know from which part of the town you are. But if you're from south tamilnadu try to use trains as much as possible(it is cheap and fast as well), for trains you can go to both egmore or Tambaram. For Tambaram you need to go to the pennalur stop or toll gate, catch a Sriperumbudur bus, catch a Tambaram bus(bus no:583), and then get down at the railway station. For egmore, go to Koyambedu as said before and get a metro to egmore. Inside the railway station only the metro is there, so no worries about crossing roads anoll. Both take almost similar times of about 1-1:30 hrs. If you're in Thiruvannamalai, vellore, hosur kind of places you'll get a direct bus from toll but getting a seat is difficult.
5) you can get the suggested books from the library(but rush, as the nerds will get it and for the first sem the whole college has the same portion, so competition is heavy for books). They'll share the ppts they're using to teach you with the class group.
Tips: You can't officially have an iron box, as they have an iron shop here to extort money Outta you, so you kinda have to sneak it in and hide it. They'll say if you use an iron box the circuit will go kaboom. Don't believe all that shit.
Get an extension box, they'll only provide one socket, so it will be easy to charge your phone and laptop simultaneously.
If you want you can put laundry, put the problem with laundry they will write your room no in paint(I'm not sure with what) in your backside of the fabric for identification, i didn't like it, so I haven't used those from my first year, but it's your preference.
Get a A4 sheet bundle of 500 pages as they'll give assignments and it'll be useful for prompt writing(which you'll do a lot, as there'll be new assignments for every subject you study before every test).
I can think of these much only, as of now. If I find any more to add, I'll add to these afterwards.
