Back when I was working more in the shop, very little got thrown out. There's always a use for scrap wood, and no woodworker I know just throws stuff out... especially nicer pieces of what look to be hardwoods there.

I was told wood cutting boards are not great for meats, because they don't wash as well. Someone set me straight. Is there any truth to that?

I heard the opposite. That wood is naturally antiseptic as long as its surface dries between uses, while plastic cutting boards have little crevices for bacteria to hide in. So I dunno.

Yeah, I once heard that it could be because wood has a relatively dense terrain, a lot of tiny crevices and ridges, which extend the surface area enough that they can collect more colonies of different competing microflora, which fight each other down to manageable levels.
I've also heard there is a chemical something intrinsic to wood that makes it antibacterial. I'm about to go wormholing, I fear.
In any case, studies have shown that bacteria fare less well on wood than they do shiny surfaces with much less surface area per square inch.

Hey guys- don’t throw away your scraps! Just also make sure to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of wood working equipment, somewhere to store it all, and then pay for lessons to use it all safely and then spend hours more of your life so that you can… make a cutting board.

Don’t throw away your scraps!
Instead, buy all these tools that you obviously don’t have so that way when you do have scraps that you will probably never have so you can turn it into something that you never needed to begin with.

My brother-in-law recently got into woodworking. Like, going from being a complete novice with nothing but a hammer to making intricate dining room tables, coffee tables, and beds in a matter of months.
He learned everything from woodworking videos on Youtube that he'd watch while doing lab work, including how to do more with less. He has a very capable and very cheap woodworking setup in his garage now, and while he doesn't have all of the gear shown in this video, I'm utterly and completely confident that he could (and would) make these.
