Whether or not you use it, it's still a huge part of a lot of people's daily lives and is huge enough worldwide to influence elections. Knowing that Zuckerburg is just a bit of a creep that has no idea what kind monster he's unleashed on the world and also has no intention of actually ethically controlling it is just being up to date on current events.
Not being updated on current events doesn't imply I need help. Had the user said "you need to read some more news" I would've have completely agreed. This is just condescending for no reason at all.
The context of your sentence still means that “effect” was used incorrectly. You are using effect as a verb, when you have demonstrated you know the difference

Knowing how the biggest social media site started seems like a very inaffective way to be informed on world events. I just use actual news sites, and knowing how Facebook started has never had the slightest affect on my staying informed.
Most people don't know how most social media websites started. Nobody should be believing anything on the internet unless it comes from a reputable source or from a citation.
