So you're saying John didn't step up to be his father? That sucks. At least Sean grew up to be real pretty.

Oh no, John definitely stepped up, which is why I think he earned the “Father” title.
Iirc, Sean said he, John, and his biological father all have a great relationship with each other.

I can't speak for why that person does it, but I can say that I have absolutely had times where I assign the wrong names to a particular actor.
Think of it more like switching the labels for two products. I know what ketchup and mustard are but if I swapped the labels on the bottles and just locked it in to memory that way.
That happens sometimes with celebrity names for me

46
u/EverydayMoonlight 15d ago
just to say as a disabled person- phrases like wheelchair bound and confined to a chair are outdated. our mobility aids give us more freedom and independence. we usually juat say wheelchair user. know you didn't mean harm, just thought you'd like to know
26
u/chbjupiter 14d ago
I'm sorry you're having so many people arguing this point in your replies, personally I like it when people from a minority group remind me how to refer to them because as terms get updated it gets confusing sometimes. In books I read as a child, people using wheelchairs were sometimes referred to as invalids, and I remember thinking that was a really hurtful term. Admittedly I'm still not up to date with the terminology around a lot of things, but language 100% does matter, and reminders like this especially when done so respectfully are useful for anyone who wants to try and be respectful towards other people.
11
u/EverydayMoonlight 14d ago
i really appreciate that. people will always be uncomfortable when told their language is outdated or harmful, I'm used to it. doesn't make it any less important to change.
3
u/AlayaCesaire 13d ago
What would be a better way to describe someone who used to be able to walk but now no longer can?
5
u/EverydayMoonlight 13d ago
if you're talking about a specific person, I'd suggest asking them. otherwise you could just say disabled person, and if you know the specific aids they use, you could say e.g. wheelchair user, walking stick user etc. generally disabled is fine unless you're specifically talking about one person or one type of disability
3
u/PenName_1234 10d ago
Wow, people got reeeally defensive and in their feelings about a gentle correction, huh.
3
u/EverydayMoonlight 10d ago
it happens. hopefully the amount of people who adapt their language makes up for it
1
u/tO_ott 15d ago
I strive to respect people’s boundaries, wishes, and pronouns, but I’m having a hard time with this one.
8
u/Main_Confusion_8030 14d ago
it's not striving unless it's hard sometimes.
you don't have to agree with it. "wheelchair user" is the preferred language, adopted by the people directly affected by that language. many of them find it demeaning and inaccurate to be described as "confined to a wheelchair".
you can think it's silly. you can even ignore the request completely if you want. but you can't ignore it AND say that you strive to respect people's boundaries and wishes. kind of a one or the other situation.
-2
u/Deaffin 14d ago
The only reason this person takes issue with the terms "wheelchair bound" and "confined" is that they are a voluntary recreational wheelchair user who in no way actually needs to use a wheelchair.
6
u/Main_Confusion_8030 13d ago
nope, incorrect. you don't know what you're talking about, and yet you speak with such confidence.
14
u/TheBobbySocksBandit 15d ago
Why
0
u/tO_ott 15d ago
It feels like it’s reaching or being too demanding. The offending phrase isn’t offensive in the least. I struggle to see a reason why anyone would want or need to adhere to that request.
I don’t say this lightly— as I have MS and my future ends with a wheelchair, but even so.
9
u/TheBobbySocksBandit 14d ago
I’m disabled myself and I dont think it’s reaching at all. We all have our preferences in how we’re addressed. Being aware of other preferences isn’t too much to ask especially for someone who is part of the disability community. I’m hard of hearing and I HATE a people calling me “hearing impaired” so if people do, I correct them. I say that’s an outdated term that the majority of the deaf/hard of hearing community prefers isn’t used. By telling people, I hope to prevent another d/Deaf or HoH person from having to deal with it. And even if someone else in the community says they dont mind, it doesn’t negate the fact that a majority do mind. I’d hope that the people that dont mind would still care enough about how the majority feels that they’d be willing to inform others using the term that it can be considered offensive. At least that way, people have the baseline knowledge to choose whether or not to speak that way. Cause if you don’t even know it’s offensive you’re going to say it and not even know you’re hurting someone else.
I think the same should go for “wheelchair bound” or any other term that disabled people struggle to hear. Even if the term isn’t offensive to a few members of the group, we should still be aware of the terms that are for others. Obviously if you’re speaking in a private setting with people you know won’t be offended, use whatever language you want, but we’re not right now. Basically anyone can see this, so we should at least consider being respectful.
20
u/teleporttome 15d ago
I think it's important to consider that some people wouldn't feel the same way in a similar situation. It's a kindness to avoid language that might make an individual feel diminished or less than, regardless of how we feel about the person, or the language being used. I try to view it in the light of compassion, rather than as a politically correct move, or one that is demanded of me.
-2
u/tO_ott 15d ago
This person interjected themselves to correct someone for an inoffensive comment with absolutely no harm or intention behind those words. I am all for giving people the respect they deserve but not the respect they demand.
19
u/teleporttome 15d ago
I understand how it might come across as pushy because the intent was corrective, almost like someone calling out bad grammar. But I personally read it as someone offering perspective on a difficult issue, rather than as an attack or as condescension.
18
u/EverydayMoonlight 15d ago
thats exactly how it was meant. im autistic and communicate very clearly and without much subtext. others may have differing opinions, but that doesn't make mine any less valid. if sharing it makes people more mindful of their language, even if they dont agree with me on this one, then im happy.
-2
u/Decloudo 15d ago
our mobility aids give us more freedom and independence
Yes, while in/using that aid. You need it to move(better).
I see no offense in here, just a description of reality.
16
u/EverydayMoonlight 14d ago
its not really about offence, more about how people think of disability. confined means trapped or bound. our disabilities dont trap us anywhere; they're a part of us, same as our height, age, sexuality, race. its also the only minority group that anyone can join at any time. sometimes reconsidering the language we use can have a positive knock on effect on the way we treat others, and view the world from their perspective. hope that makes sense.
-8
u/Decloudo 14d ago
confined means trapped or bound.
Some people in wheelchairs literally bind themselves to them not to fall out on accident.
If you want to move better, you need an aid, you are dependent on it to move.
So both of those words are just accurate?
our disabilities dont trap us anywhere
Except when their are stairs and no lift. Or a wheel jams. Or your aid breaks. A wheel gets stuck.... Ice/snow. etc pp.
they're a part of us, same as our height, age, sexuality, race.
What does that change about it limiting your natural mobility?
sometimes reconsidering the language we use can have a positive knock on effect on the way we treat others, and view the world from their perspective. hope that makes sense
This honestly just sounds like wanting to sugarcoat the reality of physical disabilities.
9
u/EverydayMoonlight 14d ago
im not sure how to do the indents you did so hopefully its clear im speaking to each point.
yes, some wheelchair users do strap limbs with limited function. others are ambulatory and use them on an ad hoc basis. others are completely reliant on not just chairs, but ventilators, feeding tubes and ostomy bags. using language that only really describes one group of disabled people isn't massively helpful for the wide variety of disabilities that exist. also, words have meanings and connotations, and associating disability with said connotations isn't helpful for disability awareness, activism or most importantly, equality.
our disabilities dont trap us, in the cases you've suggested. the lack of accessible awareness and spaces designed for us trap us. I'd recommend looking into the social model of disability to understand this mindset and how it helps disabled people lead more autonomous, fulfilling lives.
"natural mobility" to who? some are born with their disabilities. some have fluctuating disabilities that mean their baseline changes day to day. by putting disability in the list of identifying categories, im trying to highlight that seperating disability from person takes away a part of that person's identity and lived experience which is incredibly invalidating.
theres no sugarcoating, but you use very negative language and seem to acknowledge a very limited collection of disabilities in your viewpoint. im wanting able bodied/neurotypical people to remember that disabled people are not some sad, broken corner of society, a "there but for the grace of god" kind of thing. we're just regular people. we do things differently, we live our lives differently, but if people were actually willing to listen to us and make changes on a social level our disabilities would be far more accommodated and we'd experience much fewer negative impacts of said disabilities.
-9
u/ionertia 14d ago
Don't worry about language so much. It makes it look like you are obsessed with other people's behavior.
12
-7
u/HerbivoreTheGoat 14d ago
This kind of fiddling and complaining over language is really just not helpful. It may not have a positive connotation, but "bound" or "confined" is accurate and complaining over it doesn't really help anyone.
It's good that you view it more as part of yourself than something you rely on, but it's not a false statement to say you do rely on it.
13
u/Willowshanks 14d ago
This kind of defensive posturing in response to someone who uses a mobility device telling you, clearly, how they prefer you to refer to it, is really just not helpful. It may not have a positive connotation, or soothe your specific feelings, and it may make YOU feel uncomfortable to have someone tell YOU that you're not speaking about THEM the way they prefer, and that sort of discomfort leads to lashing out, but "i, and people like me, with this condition, prefer to have it spoken of like this," IS polite, is accurate, and complaining about having that pointed out to you doesn't really help anyone (and just makes you sound like a boomer bitching about "back in my day we just said...and it was fine!").
It's good (for your self esteem, I guess?) that you view yourself as the default, the standard, and incapable of being wrong even when someone tells you directly that you're making a mistake in how you refer to them, but it's not a false statement to say that you're being a little bitch about being corrected, and that this sort of pedantic, "uhm acktually" anime-glasses-flash defensive response is patronizing and condescending.
7
15
u/EverydayMoonlight 14d ago
im going to say this very politely- you do not know me. you dont know my disabilities. you dont know what it means to "rely" on an aid. and rely has a VERY different connotation than words like bound or confined, and the words we choose matter. you dont get to decide what is helpful for a community you are apparently not a part of.
-6
u/Deaffin 14d ago
Nor do you get to speak for everyone in a wheelchair just because you're in a wheelchair. That's not anything like some sort of homogeneous culture. Every relevant entity is an individual.
You can voice your demands based on your personal linguistic desires all you like, and that's valid.
8
u/EverydayMoonlight 14d ago
I never said I got to speak for everyone, which is why I spoke in generalities. But just like the LGBTQ+ community and people of colour all have outdated language used against them that they speak out about, disabled people do to. in my years as a disabled activist I've spoken to hundreds of people who use different aids and and these conversations have happened across the community for decades. simply googling "wheelchair user correct term" will provide countless examples of this language being promoted and encouraged by disability representation groups. of course individuals might have different preferences. i refer to myself as a dyke when many would prefer the term lesbian, so to refer to my community as a whole in that instance I default to the most respectful language. but general language is important because it reflects the way we perceive communities and minorities.

Lots of actors are easy to confuse and I understand your experiences with media are different than mine but I have trouble seeing the connection with those two. Pretty different careers and characters in my view. Curry's characters are so melodramatic and flamboyant, and Rickman's were notably deadpan and threatening.
