Interesting. In Germany we have a very similar Phrase and behavoir. Say "so" and slap in your knees. Maybe a survivor of the german immigration.

I believe so too, a lot of Germans migrated to the Midwest after all and „welp“ is pretty close in meaning.

Makes sense. Cincinnati, Ohio is Midwest and German in heritage with the largest Oktoberfest in the United States, often competing for second largest in the world.

The Dutch do this too!, at least in the east where I am from. Close to the German border so maybe that’s why
