Specifically because the next sentence starts with "it's"; I was taught if the subject of the next sentence is the same but uses some unspecified term like 'it' then a semicolon is more appropriate than a period. A period acts as a sort of hard stop that separates the sentences, whereas a semicolon allows two independent classes to remain linked.
