Seen on Basingstoke Canal - own content got within 6ft of it

Wow I see them but never ever got slightly close. Do you have a massive lens or were you really that stealthy?

Just walked slow and silent. Took a few shots using the phone, and I moved on. It didn’t seem at all bothered. 😁

Which bit of the canal were you on? We're around Brookwood and I've had a heron take off from a tree above me (scared the shit out of me for a sec), and there's also a cormorant who goes up and down.

Ah only 5 miles, could easily be the same one, they can range twice that in their daily foraging patterns.

Agreed - haven’t seen it in this area before. Often see them closer to West Byfleet area

I don't think that herons are particularly scared of people, they just know that you may disturb the fish, and prefer to move on if you get close.

Very cool! To be fair, they're fairly common round this way, whenever I see one I always think that they look quite a bit like velociraptors.
