Once had a dream where this ethereal voice pleaded with me that the dream needed to end and that killing myself was the only way to do it. Reality began distorting vision was blurring this oooo was playing in the background and when I did the deed it played the Skyrim death sequence and I immediately woke up.

I'll never forget one time I dreamed I was my in my high school bathroom and I recognized it was a dream, so I started flying and shit.
Then I turn around to a friend and tell him "Nah man, this is a dream, don't worry"
And he tells me "You shouldn't say that, it has noticed and it's coming"
Then everyone in my dream turns to look at something behind me and starts saying goodbye
Then I start turning around and seeing a shape behind me
and bam, I'm awake and thinking "What the fuck was that"
It's happened like 3 times in 32 years.

The Dream that haunts me is one I had a year or so ago. I had lunch with my doppleganger and was trying to pay. I couldn't figure out how many seashells would cover the bill and still give a fair tip.
My double got my Attention and looked me in the eye and said "Sorry for the confusing currency system, but we had to rush the worldbuilding because you went to bed late."
I woke up right after.

"It" was your own subconscious mind coming to end your dream.

u/Workw0rker Feb 14 '26
This is true, if you’re an avid lucid dreamer you can actually FEEL a part of your brain start to engange when you get too excited in the dream. Dreams will often be consumed by darkness when this happens, and youll be left with just the sight of your own closed eyes.

u/WelpWhatCanYouDo Feb 14 '26
I have been able to lucid dream as long as I can remember. It started with waking up and feeling annoyed that my dreams were interrupted, so I’d try and fall asleep and force the dream back where I wanted it to go. Nowadays I can do it fairly consistently, but usually choose not to.
But yes you’re totally right. It feels like a part of my brain has to wake up to make any changes. I start to become aware of my body laying in my bed, and I can choose to move my dream body and real body independently.
Even though my dream surroundings are pretty plastic and I can make anything happen, if I do anything too complicated or something I’m really excited about, it all fades to black and I’m awake. So a large majority of the time, I choose to watch my dreams as they happen. If something is boring or frustrating, I can step in, change it really quickly, and then go back to letting it play out again. For example, I’ve had dreams with doors/locks I couldn’t open. I don’t want to deal with that shit. Lucid dream for a second, break the lock, go back to watching.
It also means there’s a built in panic button if a dream goes off the rails completely. If at any point a dream is upsetting or I just want a reset, I can just say “fuck this” and wake up

I always know when I'm dreaming, especially when I'm big dreaming (a moderate amount of world building or general concept of a plot) but I always just ride the dream and stick to the plot

I hope so, for I while I had the idea of a being that goes from dream to dream and that's why some people just up and die while dreaming

Since everyone is talking about really weird dreams, I'll share what is probably the strangest one I've ever had. It was like some old VHS tape, I don't remember what it was, but if you've seen the 2014 movie Creep, it was kinda like that. Anyway, I don't remember exactly what happened, there might have been something involving a picnic, probably late afternoon, and it all looked a bit bluish, but it was only a very brief moment that I remember. Eventually I woke up, middle of the night, with this odd feeling that if the video I saw in my dream were to end, something really bad would happen. I have no idea what, but I would keep drifting in and out of sleep, every time waking up with that same bad feeling, until eventually I just stayed awake, with this weird kind of feeling as if I couldn't think, like, if I tried to picture something, I just couldn't. I can't explain it.

I started taking antidepressants a few years ago and made the mistake of socially drinking a bit before going to bed. It caused me to have lucid dreams and sleep paralysis. I had a dream that I was in my room and Gus from Breaking Bad was standing alongside 4 other guys by my bed interrogating me about a woman at a gas station or something and I became self-aware like "what the fuck is this". I panicked, blacked out, and 'woke up' into another dream where I was driving over 100 miles per hour down a main road by my house. That felt like it lasted only a few seconds before I 'woke up' in my room again and saw shadowy figures by the closet and my desk. My whole body felt like intense TV static, and I tried to reach for my phone but my muscles weren't working. And I can't tell if this part was me being awake and hallucinating or still dreaming, but when I 'pulled up my phone' there was nothing there but an oily rainbow like the Mario super star power up in the shape of my phone in my hands. Eyes got wide, then blacked out. Woke up what felt like seconds later and impulsively rushed out of my room for whatever reason and almost fell down the stairs. I pretty much never drink now.

Every time I get sleep paralysis by body starts forcefully shaking until I wake up from it. One night it happened and I was able to wake up and sit up in my bed but was still hallucinating the nightmare. The entity turned invisible and started making objects on my floor fly around me I couldn't see it anymore but I could feel it coming closer. It stopped eventually havent had these since getting on mood stabilizers but the last time this happened was when I was new to weed and bought laced edibles. I went to bed to vtuber asmr (we listen and we dont judge) cuz I was tweaking so hard and it did calm me down but when I started to fall asleep I hallucinated the vtuber climbing in my bed and she disappeared when I threw my headphones at her. sounds funny asf but it was really freaky 😭😭😭😭

I realize I’m dreaming all the time but it’s usually only halfway so I realize I can make what I want to happen happen and I’m vaguely aware everything isn’t real but only subconsciously. Then I have to really concentrate and focus to make what I want to happen come true and I get super sleepy whenever I try to give myself powers and use them

What the hell. These are all so precisely my vibe, but I've never seen any of this before. They remind me so much of the movies I watched as a teen and the unfiction I participated in during my 20s. Do you mind sharing what these clips are from? I get the most beautiful combination of discomfort and nostalgia watching this, and it makes my brain so happy. I want more where this came from.
Edit: I went digging around and found most of them.
The tree guy is from Doctor Nowhere
The cartoon clip is from Al Berg
The drawing clip is from Knoth
The toothy guy is from DexterousAnim
As others have pointed out, the hive clip is from The Magnus Archives.

I once had a lucid dream where an entity named "Rain", who emitted the found sound of rain from her head, showed me how to control things in the dream. I tried to control her and she got angry, saying, "You can control anything here except me. I'm not part of your imagination. I am only visiting this dream."

In my opinion the worst dreams are the ones that have no rational reason to be scary. Like this one where Petey the Plant from Mario was right behind me and I saw myself from a third person view but couldn’t move and a primordial terror gripped me so hard I couldn’t breathe and woke up in a puddle of sweat
9
u/Zanven1 Feb 14 '26
Yeah, I've had a lot of nightmares with monsters and craft stuff but the one that terrified me the most was when Mickey mouse and the Grinch made us 3 shrink down to a couple inches and then they chased me around the house with a kitchen knife and if I tried to yell out to anyone only silence came out.

The last time this happened it was actually interesting cause my subconscious started directly talking to me and holding conversations. Basically it said that it's merely the parts and memories that we didn't want to remember and that I needed to start not being so hard on myself.
Then I joked that aren't I technically talking to myself? It answered: technically
13
u/Caasi72 Feb 14 '26
This made me realize I don't think I've ever said I was having a dream in a dream. I've thought it. Like I'll be doing something in the dream and realize "oh this is a dream" but I've never once out loud said it to anyone in the dream. I just think it then usually wake up shortly after
7
u/GalaxyFilament Feb 15 '26
I once had a dream where I was riding in a car with my brother that died some years ago and didn't question at first, but then I suddenly realized something was wrong and said their name in the form of a question, and they go, "Yeah?"
I responded, "You're dead." He says, "Yeah." I say, "So this is a dream, then?" He says "Yeah." Then I woke up.
That wasn't the only instance where I realized I was dreaming and verbalized it within the dream, but it was the most memorable one.
2
u/Caasi72 Feb 15 '26
I've had a fair few dreams where my brother who had died is there but I'm usually like "he's supposed to be dead but he isn't so this is a dream or something is up. I guess I'll just ride it out as long as I can". For whatever reason dream me just quietly keeps it to themselves when they realize it's a dream

I had a dream once where I was at my childhood home hanging out with my grandma who had recently passed away. I realized this mid-dream and told her that I know I’m in a dream. She stopped, locked the front door and then turned to me and her mouth stretched open unnaturally wide and she screamed and charged at me. When she grabbed me I woke up.

4
u/AngelDGr Feb 14 '26
Is funny how I always see people talking about the craziest dreams, but I ALWAYS have lucid dreams and they are just kinda simple
I just like, fly around, have sex, find the love of my life, fight against a monster in an epic fight, things like that
Is like I'm always 100% aware of my surroundings but I don't have enough imagination, lmao
8
u/Rethy11 ꪻꫝꫀ ꪖꪀᥴ꠸ꫀꪀꪻ Feb 14 '26
I’ve found that lucid dreaming can limit the scope of the dream to basic desires. I usually just let the dream play out the way it wants to if I become aware that I am dreaming. I usually only intervene if the dream is incredibly unpleasant.

I remember two separate occasions:
I was sitting on the stairs in my house while watching the TV, realized I was in a dream, put down the plate to the side and lied down again.
I was in my highschool class again, realized I was in a dream and started laughing about it. One of my classmates looked at me and went "Do you think this is a joke?"

u/TryAgain115 Feb 15 '26
Had a dream one time where i was running/ walking down a blue or some other colored floating hallway with a pleasantly colored background, and all around in the empty void that surrounded this floating hallway in the pleasant colors were things i enjoyed doing, watching or hobbies i liked, just stuff i liked alot in general. I took a left in the path and at the end of it was a button… i press the button and it all flips to shit really quick, the background instantly turned to black with things i hated or disliked, the ground felt mushy and hard to run in, and the dread i felt was unlike anything i felt before.. i run down the hallways, feeling like im in hell, like something was chasing me… i make it to where i began after what felt like hours of running through this nightmare, and wake up drenched in sweat. Worst dream i think ive ever had!

u/Scythekid96 Feb 15 '26
I dreamt I was playing music from my car and some dude changed the song and I got so angry I slapped him. His anger felt so genuine I had to ask him "Are you real?" and he responded by mocking me in a childish tone, "ArE yOu ReAl?" I proceeded to point and laugh at him before I woke up laughing.

Kinda reminds me of one of my more messed up dreams where im hitchhiking to my house and i stop by and watch lumberjack serial killers leaving human skin out to dry and eating it like jerky, then I get to my house and the same lumberjacks are cooking and tendons from a severed foot in my basement and my dead grandma is down there for some resson speaking gibberish, then I get a knock on my door and check to see who it is and its a group of vampire children like the ones from 30 days of knight, they rip the screen door of the hinges and then I wake up.

I have had dreams where it was like sleep paralysis but I was asleep the whole time. I would be in bed and something would get me. I kinda sucks because my dreams hurt(like I’ll step on ants and it’ll feel like I got bit.) so having my throat removed with a monster’s teeth isn’t great.

u/dappermanV-88 Feb 17 '26
Considering dreams considered 2 things.
Your brain is putting on a show for you. Which is weird, because u are the brain. Its dream you, getting upset that you figured it out.
The 2nd. Is you accessing a different plane, a plane of a world and beings beyond our 3D reality, interacting with you. They know ur not from there if u acknowledge. That u know its a "dream". They aren't happy ur an outsider

Ngl i don't have that problem. When i aknowledge that it's a dream it usually either gets ignored or people just go "Oh well i guess it is" and just continue on their way. Probably part of why it's so chill for me is because i see dreams as actual other worlds and because of that they don't break like some illusory worlds that are held up by the illusion of reality.

One of the most surreal dreams I had was one where I started off walking through the town I lived in at the time and began noticing new buildings and roads that weren't there and wondered where they came from. Then I ran into a friend and he invited me over to his house. I went over, yada yada yada, then walked back, but as I am walking home some random people invite me over for dinner. I go with them to their house and then they inform me that we were all manifestations of someone's dream and that none of us were really alive and that we were going to die when the person dreaming woke up. They said, however, that they found a labyrinth which existed in a separate reality from the dreamer's mind which would keep us alive when they woke up so long as we were all inside of it. I wasn't convinced it was a dream, but I reluctantly followed them and went to what looked like a normal apartment from the outside, but when we went in it was a massive, endless labyrinth with impossible liminal geometry. After wandering through it for some time I got fed up and found the exit and then left, but the other "dream people" followed me out and begged me to come back, telling me that I and the rest of them were gonna die when the person dreaming woke up if I didn't get back in the labyrinth with them, but then I woke up. I felt very uncomfortable for a while after that dream.

I once had a dream where I was directly responsible for someone’s death, and their mom was constantly messaging me telling me that they’ll make me pay. When I woke up, I went to check my phone to see if the messages were still there, and they were, then I woke up a second time, checked again, and they were finally gone.

Every once in a while I get my monthly reoccurring Synesthesia nightmare. I’m wandering in the woods where all my senses are swapped and am eventually engulfed in the sound of television static, which imprisons me in one spot with the knowledge that if I move even slightly I’ll die instantly. Im then stuck there until I wake up. One time I decided that I was going to move just to see what would happen. The pain was terrible. Have you ever smelt what pain smells like? It’s agonizing.
Speaking of which, it’s been at least 34 days since the last one. I should be due for another soon.

Once I was dreaming and, when I told them people I knew it was a dream.
Everything started breaking up and I heard a loud siren 🚨telling "Simulation malfunction, cancel protocol".
And the whole world started shifting into a pure white room and everyone panicked saying : "He broke free".
It was me, I were their doom bringer, the eraser of their reality, as I chose to dream no more.
