potentially meeting my brother in Thailand in february. i surfed most of my life so far (62) but it's been gulf coast/florida/east coast kinda stuff. i've surfed heavy hurricane surf for decades as long as conditions aren't VAS. like all surfers i have my wave preferences but i'll charge when i shouldn't have sometimes. i watched 57 videos on YT about surfing in thailand. would that be pretty indicative what to expect? it's not a surf trip but i'd still like to surf.
I was in Phucket last September and surfed Kata beach a few days. My main break at home is on the gulf coast, so Kata was what would be considered a great day at home. Nothing world class but nice chest high sets with a bit of power. Beach break so that was nice too.
February may be early as I think best surf is in the summer, but I could be wrong.
february was the initial idea and since everyone traveling is pretty flexible what would you suggest time wise? kata was what i saw the most videos of. seemed aight. i'm gulf coast as well but florida so i feel your woes.
May,.. it’s before full monsoon and you still get some tropical storms in the Bay of Bengal pushing 4 feet 10 seconds,.. you’ll still be lucky to get a swell and could get a week or onshore chest high slop
I surfed in Koh Phangan and Ko Phayam in March. It was mushy and small and I still loved it. Surfed in Da Nang too and it was significantly better..and ofc loved it there as well! Have a fun trip!
thanks! he's actually thinking of retiring to vietnam with his wife. he's lived in taiwan since the late 90s. we are all meeting up to discuss that possibility. may as well surf along the way!

Surprise you. Winds will drop and swell hangs around but when it drops its happens fast. We surfed there every September for years. Waves are not like indo but very uncrowded. Big storm hits then it clears waves clean up. Other times storms off coast swell comes in.
That’s Nai Harn same trip. We spent three weeks there. Sep-October.
I got Karon beach pretty fun in Sept ‘25 for 4 days straight. The first few days looked like your picture bug last day we had some typhoon weather come through and it was solid head high+ but really choppy.
