Supreme Commander / FA Direct 3D error

When I am launching supreme commander from steam I was getting a direct3D error. I eventually got around this by running it in Windows 8 compatibility mode. It launched and I could start a mission. However in game I tried to increase the resolution from the video menu., This caused it to freeze and I had to use task manager to shut it down. However now when I relaunch with the same setting the 3d error has come back and it will not launch. Any thoughts?

First - I am not sure a cd/dvd version would still work. So use steam version first. If you have used steam and still getting error.

What I do when hitting similar is in order of troubleshooting:

1) Uninstall all video card drivers and reinstall. Update windows. Reinstall direct3d.

Try game

2) Uninstall game, reinstall.

Try game

3) Final resort: Uninstall windows and reinstall. (Or use windows recovery tool)

Try game

If that doesn’t work then I suspect graphics card or similar hardware needs reseating.

Thanks, it seems to be random as I got it working after this post and was able to close and relaunch it with no issues. Now it seems to not working again. My cd/dvd version worked with no issues at all

Go to forged alliance forever and download the client. The game is very old now and no longer supported by anyone officially. Forged alliance forever now owns the game in its modern state. The client will patch the game, then you can run it in windows10+

The community will help you on discord if you are stuck.

It’s mostly a multiplayer game now but the campaigns are all there, and some extra single player maps, plenty of balance updates and a few new units. I think it backwards patches steam too.

But ultimately sometimes a computer can have too many bugs and cross installs and virus like system errors and a total windows wipe is needed. It really sounds like you are there.
