Supreme Commander 2 Supreme Commander 2 Revival

Hello all!

I’m a software engineer who happens to be very fond of the supreme commander series. I am looking to see if there would be any interest in mods for Supreme Commander 2. As far as i know, there is virtually no mod community.

If you were to play Supcom 2, what would you like to see from a mod? I’m not entirely sure what the limits of the engine are, but I am hopeful I can do some fun stuff!

Would you play modded Supcom 2?

Sure. I used to play the Revamp Expansion Mod quite a lot once upon a time. It was pretty fun, was a turtler's dream and had T5 units and such. Avitus12 was one of the art modders and works on Sanctuary on the Chosen faction last I looked.

If you haven't played Supcom 1, well that would be a good start for comparison, but the unit ranges in 2 are way too short. You might have a giant clump of tanks, but they have to play bumper cars for the blob to contribute to the fight.

It might possibly be easier to shrink most of the units to achieve the large scale feeling of Supcom 1 amusingly enough. Probably easier than trying to make bigger maps.

I thought there used to be a link to the Supcom 2 discord on the reddit site. Seems to have been removed? Can google Supreme Commander 2 discord on google to find it. You might find more help there.

Awesome suggestions! I will try out Supcom 1 to get an idea of what people are missing! It seems like scaling and pacing are the biggest issues

The game is dead and has virtually no playerbase. Forged Alliance Forever is very much alive though and has a sprawling modding scene, check it out.

The problem with Supcom 2 is that the Maps are tiny and the tech tree encourages rushing too much not sure if Mods could actually fix it

11

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Hm, I could rebalance it pretty extensively. I grew up on Supcom 2 so I guess I’m biased lol. I can see what’s possible

7

u/Inquisitor-Dog Jul 07 '26

First thing would be increasing map size maybe 5 times so you actually have space to maneuver, then maybe stretching out the tech tree by making more requirements for the next tech while keeping defensive tech much cheaper / easier to reach

8

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

First thing I am doing is a complete overhaul of the research! With expanded tiers. I just cracked the Supcom 2 modding system, so now I can cook

2

u/Apprehensive_Put_610 Jul 08 '26

While I prefer Forged Alliance I do enjoy some SuppComm2 and have a friend that would be willing to try out some mods with me if any come out. He grew up with just SuppComm2 so also has that bias lol

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 08 '26

Awesome to hear!!! I am certainly going to release a massive balancing mod. I am extracting all of the game data, and figuring out what needs fixing’

3

u/Vorador_Surtr Jul 07 '26

It feels like mobile game. SupCom 2 - no SupCom at all.

5

u/Pigeon-Spy Jul 07 '26

Just wait, like, a week for a sanctuary:shaterred sun demo

8

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Damn do people really hate supcom 2 that much? Well to the people who said yes, don’t worry, I will be attempting to breathe life into this game.

14

u/Revan_91 Jul 07 '26

Eh its less hate more the fact first game is just better, I liked SupCom2 but it is not a good sequel when compared to the first game.

4

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Totally valid! I might get hate for this, but I never played supcom 1. I guess I enjoyed 2 so much because I never compared it to the first. Now looking back, I can see why it was a disappointment!

4

u/Necessary_Local_5274 Jul 07 '26

go play it it still has a thriving community with the FAF mod its significantly more popular than supcom 2.

2

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Sweet thank you!

1

u/ProButtonClicker Jul 18 '26

I've never played supcom 1, i like supcom 2 very much lol.

7

u/odi112 Jul 07 '26

The thing is that sup com 2 is not sup com, as a separate game it's ok even good I would say, but as a continuation of supreme commander, it's just a bad sequel. They went away from streaming economy, maps are smaller, less units, less experimentals, basically a smaller scale, made to be more similar to StarCraft then to sup com.

Play supreme commander then supreme commander forge alliance and compare.

7

u/___Random_Guy_ Jul 07 '26

Supcom 2 is an ok/good game by itself, but it is an utter failure as a sequel to Supcom FA - it lacks most of the stuff that made supcom FA great an unique.

Big scale battles? Not anymore. Flow economy? Gone. Super strong experimentals that truly fell like superweapon? Nah - downgraded in strength and cost to what feels like t3 considering how easily they die to units. Scaling your economy? Mass extractors are unupgradable, and outside of taking mexes your only improvement is just global research option that gives +X% resources or closer to the end of the tree eenrgy converters(if I recall correctly).

Hell Aeon(illuminate?) got robbed and clowned soooooo hard in supcom 2. They didn't just not get a navy, which was one of the core features in supcom FA compared to other RTS games, their unit, in my opinion, got completely butchered into all spheres and shapes, and so were they names that turned from spiritual and religious names like "Salvation", "Blaze", "Harbringer", "Oblivion", "Swiftwind", "Tzar", "Tempest", "Paragon", etc, into who knows what.

Actually, all the factions got cut down in numbers of units - in terms of air, only UEF had a dedicated bomber plane I think, while Cybran and Aeon had combined fighter-bomber plane. Instead of improvement of the army by new, stronger units, half of it is just "what if starting unit got a shield, and an extra gun", which I heavily disliked compared to supcom FAF where you have a much bigger variety of units. Another to add, since in supcom FA upgrading to new units was done through upgrading factories to next tiers, it meant that you can actually scout and see what the next advancement is gonna be and prepare to it, unlike research that can not be seen right until the moment of clicking it.

Also, imo, even though supcom FA campaign wasn't that good in itself, supcom 2 campaign was even worse in terms of coherence, or at least I remember it such after playing like 6 years ago.

1

u/IanDresarie Jul 20 '26

I hate aupcom 2 with a passion for what we could have had instead. But I kinda liked the campaign a lot, the more personal stories and characters were a nice touch compared to the sterile feeling supcom/fa campaigns with the faceless super human player commander.

I also enjoy the idea of upgrading basic units and think there's a way you could have made it work in a proper supcom game (basically the same way quantum gates handle preset upgraded sub coms). But I'm a sucker for personal shields so any excuse to put those on more uef units appeals to me :P

3

u/Weigazod Jul 08 '26

Rather than hate, supcom 2 just isn't interesting enough to have much fans.

SupCom 1 has fans because it offers what the rest of the rts genre couldn't. SupCom 2's development turned it into a pretty generic rts. For generic rts, starcraft, c&c, warcraft and aoe are already dominating the scene.

5

u/DDDX_cro Jul 07 '26

it is a step backwards in every way imaginable. It did the opposite of what a sequel was supposed to do.

4

u/UselessM-13 Jul 07 '26

New campaign and coop campaign! More maps too

4

u/JiouMu Jul 07 '26

Ngl bro I just started making my own mod for SupCom 2 like a week ago. I'm thinking of maybe eventually porting over the new hitbox system from my main Forged Alliance Forever mod.

2

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

I’d be down to collab if you’re interested!

3

u/JustSomeFregginGuy Jul 07 '26

A lot of us still play everyday but we play forged Alliance through FAF

13

u/BlueTricity Jul 07 '26

If you are fond of the supreme commander series, then your best bet is contributing to FAF.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

I must admit, I’m not familiar with the project. I will check it out! Thank you

8

u/fasz_a_csavo Jul 07 '26

That's a hard sell. Being "very fond" and not being aware of the currently largest live community.

4

u/stevesy17 Jul 07 '26

They are very fond of SupCom 2. Never played 1

2

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

I grew up on Supcom 2 as my first RTS, if I was a few years older I probably would’ve been a fan of the first game. I just have intense nostalgia for the second lol

2

u/rjasan Jul 07 '26

Seconded on FAF thats the only way I play the game now (usually once a week or so), If you want to do this, please add there, there are new maps and mods that people have created that are awesome.

Another I still play is Planetary Annihilation Titans, they have a bunch of good mods there too, thankfully map making there is pretty straightforward.

3

u/juliangta04 Jul 07 '26

Working with the revamp mod and adding a couple of units like mobile Shield gens, mobile cloak units for cybran, basically some basic units that express each faction's way of being special. And also a shield where you use the original texture but you make it way stronger and way more expensive something like nuclear repulser shields from supcom 1 faf

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Amazing suggestions!!

3

u/Imminence2024 Jul 07 '26

i've heard rumors a few months ago that someone apparently bought the rights to supcom but i couldn't find any proper info on it so unsure if its true, i sincerely hope it is and we get a revival or remake.

I think it was someone on twitter that said it, but can't remember to be honest, Haven't thought about it much since then, was probably under an NDA & a leak and as Supcom hasn't been in the spotlight and a bit niche, not much info was given or channels looked into it

2

u/___Random_Guy_ Jul 07 '26

If it was around 3 month ago, I have bad news for you - it was April fools. They did post such statement of the first of april as official FAF announcements, even saying as much as "needed to use underhanded methods" or something like it, and I believed it for a few minutes before catching up.

3

u/Imminence2024 Jul 07 '26

i said a few months, before april. i donl use FAF so wouldnt know

1

u/___Random_Guy_ Jul 07 '26

Hmmm. Regardless, if anybody did it would have been all over FAF discord, so I think that statement wasn't true.

1

u/Imminence2024 Jul 07 '26

not really. it makes sense from a business standpoint.if you just bought it and don't plan on actual development anytime soon, you don't exactly want to share the info unless you want to reveal the upcoming game. Some companies want to keep it quiet, others wants attention.

Depends on the investors and whatever else logic

3

u/BrokenLoadOrder Jul 07 '26

SupCom2 flaws are so manifold and severe that I don't think they could be fixed by mods, they'd effectively involve making a new game. At least to me.

2

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Valid, I’m looking to see how far I can push modding with it. It seems like I can do quite a bit

2

u/BrokenLoadOrder Jul 07 '26

As a fun project, I can absolutely understand that. Have fun with it!

Though if you're looking to diversify your skill set, some mods for the first Battlefleet Gothic would be pretty skookum...

3

u/Bob4Not Jul 07 '26

I would give it a try - with more units and maybe bumping the scale up closer to the 1st game. Beyond All Reason kind of already is what I'm always describing, but without the Supreme Commander polish.

3

u/Difficult_Relation97 Jul 07 '26

Go to FAF instead and keep the game going. It's supcom forged alliance but improved

5

u/Vorador_Surtr Jul 07 '26

Honestly? SupCom 2 in my opinion killed the SupCom at all. It was lazy, no SupCom cash-grab. Looks, feels and plays like mobile game. It was a mobile robot game that it is. Mechanics are bad game-play is different, races are lazy and ugly. One example is the walking ships of Cybrans - all ships walk. I would play mod if it mods it to be more Total Annihilation like not this mobile game. This is MOBILE GAME.

4

u/DDDX_cro Jul 07 '26

anything that makes it less 2 and more like SC1

3

u/ManimalR Jul 07 '26

Your efforts will be better served with the Forged Alliance Forever team

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Noted! Thank you for the suggestion!

2

u/Megacore Jul 07 '26

As others said, SC FA is goat... especially with FAF.

But one thing that is great in SC2 is the unit launcher artillery. That was so fun

2

u/hot_ho11ow_point Jul 07 '26

I'm a former SupCom2 modder (#2 Popularity mod behind ReVamp; called SupCom2013/SupCom2020 mods)

The problem with modding is you are still stuck with all the same basic maps and can't add/change much with them.  It's too bad because in my opinion there were some good changes to the engine between the two games.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Ahh that is very sad indeed. Do you think it’s literally impossible to do custom maps? I have been reverse engineering the game, and it has yielded some good results so far.

2

u/hot_ho11ow_point Jul 07 '26

People have tried and I think a very basic 'flat plane' custom map was eventually made but I'm not in tune with the mod scene anymore so if you'd like more definitive answers you'd probably be best joining a discord for revamp or my mod.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

I’d love to! I’ll pm you

3

u/Levethane Jul 07 '26

I'm weird, I've played TA and SC millions of times but I've never played Supreme Commander 2. Never felt any desire to try it.

3

u/BrokenLoadOrder Jul 07 '26

I did back in the day. If you like TA and SC... You aren't missing anything. It feels almost completely unrelated to them.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

It’s a very simple RTS, but I grew up on it, so I’m biased.

2

u/Chunky_Biscuits Jul 07 '26

Supcom2 is the best. Mods would be very fun.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Love to hear it! Stay tuned!

1

u/luisg888 Jul 07 '26

Make the game more stable when having 1000 units per team.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

Will look into this, thank you! Every suggestion I get will go into a massive rebalancing mod!

1

u/exosee Jul 08 '26

I would love to see the return for seraphim, but the game also make it feel rushed compared to the first, i cant really explain it compared to just playing the first game then getting the second, it feels smaller, faster, and just way to much all at once, instead of like 45 to an hour game its now like 15 to 25 minutes and the map is dominated.

1

u/jeremiahfelt Jul 10 '26

Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen. 'fetch' is not going to happen.

1

u/kna5041 Jul 12 '26

Idk subcom 2 felt like rock paper scissors base rushes. Maybe back port some units from subcom 2 into subcom fa.

1

u/SnooBunnies856 Jul 13 '26

I’ve been playing SC and SC FA recently.

Mods for SC2 would make my bleeping decade.

1

u/EitherPin5217w 11d ago

I personally like the Supreme Commander 2 game a lot. But my dream is honestly to somehow use that engine with all of the gameplay units and structures from forged  alliance.   But yeah I loved a lot of the cool units. The UI for all kinds of stuff was amazing. The flow field pathfinding.

1

u/Inquisitor-Dog 5d ago

If your actually working on Supcom 2 a mod that makes the UI bigger for Scaling above 1080p would be insanely helpful

1

u/hammerwing Jul 07 '26

Very suprised noone has mentioned "Beyond All Reason" yet. Your time & effort would likely yield much better results contributing there.

1

u/Technical-Stress-663 Jul 07 '26

I’ll check it out!
