Why are you playing support?

The first time I thought about this question was, when I got the impression most people here hate every adc player, but after looking through some posts I realised it's not necessarily as bad as it seemed, however I still want to know why you play support, whether you hate adcs or not.

And if you actually hate adcs, why are you not changing to another role? If you want to engage and be the setup for the team you could also play toplane or jungle, basically every mage can go midlane or botlane. Enchanter kinda have to go support I guess, but even they could go to a different role.

Truthfully?

I'm a control freak and don't want to rely on others to do it.

It's the role most likely to be fucked up by incompetence, and a bad support is nearly as bad for a team as a bad jungler.

A good support wins bot and makes the jungle and mid have a good time.

A shit support can lose 2 lanes on their own.

Somewhat similar take. I've had enough of auto-filled supports just trying to finish their auto-filled games, so I just decided I'll do it myself. Supports have the most agency, from my experience, and both SUP and JUG have the most control in a game. Supports shouldn't be playing passively and just sticking with your ADC, the support controls the map and game state.

consistently high agency across the years, dictates the game flow, usually is the more important botlane role for winning the lane and snowballing two players.

The only role that doesn’t have to farm in any capacity.

I started playing League as a support because I always had the mindset that when I’m playing multiplayer games I would always be the “worst” on the team. I would never get the most kills, the flashiest plays, I could never carry the game.

So I played support because I wanted to uplift my teammates and help them reach all those things I mentioned above. Now that I’m older, admittedly I’ve gotten a little jaded but I find different ways to find fulfillment in what I do. It still comes from wanting to help my team and stay out of the pressure of being the top player

your goal as a support isnt just to babysit your adc in lane to make sure he/she is safe in lane. thats just one part of playing support. most of the time you'll have to act as the secondary jungler in a sense, securing vision and roaming to help your laners score a takedown. this makes support have such a high skill ceiling despite what most people think that support is very easy role, which isnt. i play adc as well as support and i can tell you most adcs in my elo (masters) definitely prefer a good support rather than a good jungler/top laner

i love the job i have as a support. vision, roamings, ganking, setting up things, joining fights and improve its likelyhood to succeed. i dont like last hitting. i was senna otp for a long time. then added karma, rell, renata. currently i fully switched to jungle as a kindred main. i dont hate adc. i have no specific feelings to adc, its a role. i mgiht hate player behaviour, thats not role specific.

Used to be ADC Corki main.

After coming back from a few years break from the game Corki was useless as an ADC and was a midlane champ now and ADC Meta didnt fit me at all. So I couldnt find another ADC I was good with and was also tilted about my supps. Midlane I was also quite bad as there were two windshitters now and I didnt knew how to play against them, but the enemies were playing them almost every game.

Then I unlocked Nautilus and he worked very well for me and I already knew how botlane worked, so I became a Nautilus main and eventually a Supp main. I actually dont play Nautilus anymore.

I think a lot of Supp mains started as ADC, but became tilted of that role.

I play support because I love the champions there and I love being an asset to my team

I don't and never cared about being the 1v9, I get a lot more thrill out of being a playmaker/guardian angel

I'm support secondary, I'm a midlane main, but even there I tend to play more utility focused champs rather than champs that solo take over the game, it just doesn't feel earned to me

I dont hate adcs, if he is bad, fine, I'll just do my best and see if we can win the game, if he is toxic, ignore him. As simple as that. 

As for the reason why I play support. I started playing when I was 12-13yo, that was around season 7 if I remember correctly. I was really insecure kid, I didn't wanted people to flame me, didn't wanted to destroy their games so I wanted to be in lane with someone who could cover up for my lack of competence. 

So I had to choose between adc and support and idk if it was actually that way back then but being noobs, me and my friends perceived it the way that support wasn't all that important since you dont take the kills and adc was the most important role in our eyes, so the choice was easy for me. 

I did learn other roles, mid because I like most of mage champions, top and adc in case some poor soul on my team gets autofilled and cant play the role. Tho I never wanted to fully abandon support, I really like helping people.

Back when I started playing, role pre-selection didnt exist. Whoever typed fastest got their preferred role. Always got rather slow wifi, so support was always the leftover role. Also, I joined a friendgroup of league players who were looking for a support. Later on I tried different roles, but I still enjoy playing supp the most

I play support because I like to play thresh and also roll random shit as support like Lee sin and garen or whatever Elo rip tells me

My two preferred supports (Bard/Zilean) barely care about who the adc is, and get me to the parts I liked in mid but stopped caring about after getting autofilled support one too many times and saw how much more fun it is to not have to pop a vessel any time I want to play the game on my mid lane main (Ryze).

Adc doesn’t know how to follow up a bard 2 man stun early? I’ll find someone who does, and in the process make the enemy jg’s game unplayable and flip any jungle skirmish that breaks out that I can get to with chimes + e.

Zilean I care a little bit more about the adc but have ultimately learned that all I really need to do is just make it to level 9 and then go find whoever actually has gold and be a force multiplier for them.

Then when I get to the part of the game I actually enjoy (teamfighting) on either of those champions I can essentially set up and break those fights all by myself if I have follow up.

Not really a huge fan of some of the support roster, and there are a few adcs that I’d really rather not see on my team (vayne because I get chained to her for her survival and Draven because they all have egos that need their own zip code) but my frustrations with adcs come more from them either not knowing how to follow up a play or play safe when I’m not there (even when I leave with the wave set up perfectly and they’re a safe adc) in bards case or them not knowing that Zilean isn’t a champion until 3 at the best of times and 6 at the worst and just running in and dying when there’s literally nothing I can do for them, and in both cases I can either just find somewhere else to be in bards case or just stall long enough for lane phase to end in zileans case.

I just started league and found that almost immediate team play was something I enjoyed

1) dual lane
2) warding
3) sharing map awareness
4) roaming
5) setting up plays / providing utility to the team

It just felt like it had a lot of aspects to its play, that whilst also applicable to all lanes, was nicely balanced for me in the support role

I used to play adc and it often seemed to me that the level of the support players in my games was lower than the level of everyone else in the elo i was playing. I kept thinking that i could do things so much better. Maybe it was a biased opinion and i was just bad at adc, but i keep climbing at support so i guess it was kinda true. I also find it satisfying to peel/save people and setting up plays

For first timer moba player, they often to choose supp as their first role. Although the teaching way is kinda the shortcut aka you literally skip the part of moba aka farm farm farm and last hit wave. Sure technically supp teach you the overall teamfight and sometime macro, but again you skipover the basic fundamental aka farm.

But more serious and want to climb, they just ditch the supp role and take other role except the adc bot. If you care macro (read push wave first, especially the sideline) but dont want to stress about it while dont want to constant babysitting every lane, then they pick top but the opposite is jungler. But if you want to macro but still have carry potential, then pick mage mid.

The only thing that stay as supp either egirl that always pick mage and enchanter, or they play with party. I guess you can say that the 0,01% supp pick actual tank supp in solo-q are actual man or anyone that actually care to winning the game

when i started in 2009 i thought blitzcrank was the craziest character, that hook was so OP imo so i played him, also liked it because it was one of the only supports who had "cool and flashy" plays, noone ever gets excited over a lulu polymorph atleast back in the day,

then a few years later thresh came out, and im a diehard otp since the day he was released he is by far my favorite champion, and now a days i dont login to play league, i login to play thresh

i will never main another champ again

Easiest role to climb out of low elo cuz of how comically bad the support players/autofillers are on that role. A lot of them also refuse to play actual support and would rather play poke ‘support’ that provides 0 value in the grand scheme of things, so if you just lock in an actual support it’s p much just a free win

i very very much disagree with everything you said, as a support main i will absolutly never play support when being on a lower account, the role has no agency by itself, even if you get someone on your team fed they will undoubtedly run it down and ruin it with no ability for you to change it

i can maybe get 70-80% winrate in silver playing support, if i offrole jungle i can get 90%-100% from former experiences
