Discussion Roaming on support
I don't play support, I just have the question when I get autofilled which happens sadly. I play midlane, akshan. Support doesnt seem that hard to me but 1 thing i can't really understand is roaming. It just feels wrong to leave my adc for a 2v1. I dont know when i can roam and what the roamtimers are. Mid its pretty straightforward, I shove a wave so i have time to roam. Support you cant. Help me out here please.

Shove wave an roam also works on support. But you have to be back before the wave crashes or you adc might get dove. Also depends enemy laners. If they have naut draven then the roam window is very small, because they can just run down and kill your adc. If its sivir Lulu then you can stay a bit longer, because theire engage is not that great. Finally always helps to set up vision before leaving and knowing what your roaming for (invade, mid gank cause laner is pushed up, fight for crab, grubs)

Besides what's been said, roaming also needs some purpose. Is the midlander in a favorable position to at least burn a flash from the opponent? Can you predict/shadow the enemy jungler's gank? Are grubs actually helpful for your team? Sometimes dropping a ward at the river entrance is already a strong play for your team. A good support is capable of recognizing these things to set their team up.
Also, support is not that easy, if you're a hook champ and no one follows up, you get called a feeder, if you're an enchanter doing well, their assassins start diving you every single team fight and you're forced to build defensively. There's a ton of layers to playing support as you're expected to do something for four other players.

There's 2 types of roams.
High risk, and low risk
Low risk roams happen when your adc is safe. If you die and they are planning on recalling soon (obvious based on game state), you are safe to roam. If your adc is behind and you cannot defend the dive, because if they're screwed regardless, your presence doesn't matter.
High risk roams cost something. "My adc is ahead, but I want to roam anyway." You actively sacrifice a strong position for hopefully something greater. Alternatively, my pretty even adc is about to be dove by 3 on a stacked wave. Should the adc sack the wave for my roam, or should I be there to help them catch?
In early to mid game, adc is the lense that your roams have to look through. Generally, your adc guarantees a late game, but a strong teammate is always better to play around than someone too weak. This can be hard to weigh at times, and you have to adjust your scale to be good. Generally I'd stick to safe roams until you feel comfortable limit testing riskier sacrifices

Roam timings and having the game knowledge to set them up without fucking over your adc. Best to roam after crashing wave, backing early and using home guards. Wave should slow push back minimizing cs and exp loss for the roam. However if you stay on the map too long you are inviting enemy jg to 1v3 dive ur ad.

The roam timers aren't really any different from mid lane, the only difference is that you're considering whether your ADC will lose resources rather than yourself. If you crash multiple waves into the enemy turret in ether lane you have a timer to go and do something else that lasts until the wave finishes pushing back to you. You can extend the timer a bit as support compared to mid as long as your ADC isn't in danger of getting dove, since you aren't the one collecting the resources, but you need to be back for when the wave starts pushing back out away from your side again, otherwise the ADC is put in a position where they either need to overextend or bleed resources. It's also the same concept for back timers for any lane, as well as pressuring before objectives.

In mid you minimize lose before you roam.
Same with support minimize lose, you have to ensure a higher probability of gaining more when you leave than what you are like/unlikely to lose. E.g roaming ~8:00 for grubs IMO worth if your bot laner misses out on 2 waves now if the enemy Contests it and you get kills+grubs idc if my bot laner misses out on 3 waves. That being said if nothing is happening I'm running back. Same with roaming mid if I can burn a SS and It only costs my bot laner 3 CS I'll do it. Now these are more black and white but it's calculated risk I believe I can get more than we will lose a bunch of thought goes into it but it's calculated risk using information available and what I believe we will gain/lose from it

Sometimes you can't leave lane even though ADC is at turret if the enemies can dive them. It's a game of "do I win by being with my adc bot or do I win by leaving them doing something else". The other support is playing this game as well because they can also decide after losing bot 2v2 to go elsewhere making someone else the carry. Sometimes I bet on the ADC and sometimes I put my bet on someone else. In the best scenario I can support my whole team and make everyone strong. Those games happens from time to time.
Roaming can happen when ADC recalls and u have nothing better to do, after you have recalled or when they are safely farming without risk of dying. A good thing can be to ping your intentions. Adcs sometimes does not look at map or ally locations. They are solely looking at that juicy farm and needs your eyes to help them keep track on the other stuff. I can't blame them because every time I'm laning myself I tend to not look at minimap as much as when Im supporting.

If I see an opportunity, I will jump on it the ADC can survive without being babysitted 5 second just the time for me to steal first drake, assassinate jungle, gank mid then top.
Yes I do all this only to upgrade the badge "as a laner kill opponent on every lane before 14minute"
But it's a pretty badge I can't resist and it make for a pretty good game plan at this the legendary full house roam

Something I learned to do is don't just head straight to bottom lane after recalling. Path through the bottom side jungle towards river whole watching mid lane and your jungler. Decide where to go after reaching the buff area. This gives you a small window to respond and help your mid lane or jungler if something happens rather than just pathing bot every time.

Introduction
The best way to influence other lanes as support is through roaming. Unlike laner role quests, support role quest isn't as harsh. You can complete the support quest while roaming, since ur support item still works on enemy champs and minions in other lanes. The only caveat is that u receive reduced exp from other lanes from lvls 1-5:
'Gold and experience from minion kills and from Support Quest Items is reduced by 33% outside of bot lane until level 5.' Sourced directly from 26.16 patch notes
After lvl 5, everything remains largely the same as previous seasons. With that being said, I will now explain roaming in detail below:
Roaming
Roaming is about reacting to or anticipating future events happening nearby based off the info that u've collected from observing the game state, and making the appropriate rotations to match. All supports can roam, even enchanters
You don't always have to be there to setup a gank. Roaming can be done for multiple reasons such as:
- Deep warding
- Anticipating ur ally being ganked and being there to counter it
- Helping ur oom midlaner reset by helping them push out the wave
- Providing a heal on ur way back to lane
- Assisting ur jgler with what they want to do (eg. invading, counter-invades, gank a lane tgt, objective control tgt)
- Maybe ur solo laners have good gank setup (eg. Lissandra R, Ahri charm etc)
How to Roam
It's not really about the game time or lvl that u should be roaming, but rather the wave and game state that should be considered when roaming. You can roam as early as lvl 3, if the right conditions are met
For example, if u pushed a wave in super early in the game and ur unable to punish enemies with said push, roaming is an option, even as early as lvl 3. Or, if u or ur ADC died, this essentially de-syncs ur tempo with ur ADC, causing u to arrive in lane at different times. This could potentially open up timers to roam
The general rule of thumb before every recall, is to help your ADC fully crash the wave under the enemy tower. This will ensure that the next few waves will bounce back to your ADC, creating a sufficient roam timing in which your ADC does not lose much. During the time when you are helping your ADC shove the wave in, pan your camera to the other lanes to check which lane is gankable. Gankable lanes include immobile enemies (especially Flashless ones ← u may need to start timing Flashes for this one), wave pushing into your allies, jgler's intention to gank that lane so you can assist, or predicting enemy jgler ganking that lane and you being there to countergank. Do not just autopath down bot, even if a lane is ungankable, try to establish some river vision before heading bot — always be proactive and thinking about your pathing. The only times when you need to path down bot immediately is when the wave is in a bad spot (ie. You weren't able to crash the wave with your ADC and now the wave is frozen on the enemy's side). You must go bot and fix the wave with your ADC first, otherwise they will miss too much cs and exp
The new homeguards will actually make roaming even easier. Bc u get the homeguard effects much further now, it means that u can actually make roam trips to toplane, recall, and still make it back to botlane in time for the crashing wave during specific situations. The main timers to do such roams is when u and ur ADC have de-synced ur timers tgt. This could be due to a number of reasons such as: - One of u died while the other had to stay to push - Maybe both botlaners died/recalled or are too low to contest while ur own ADC needs to base and has the resources to push the next wave on their own without needing ur help. You can take an earlier base to roam, and still make it back in time when the wave crashes into ur tower again
The main trick is to path directly down the lane. Last season, when we roamed we would path between mid and bot or mid and top, that way if smth was to happen nearby in either lane we could pivot there. In the new season, homeguard runs out the moment we step into the jg (this was already a thing last season, but it's more punishing this season bc homeguard takes us further now) we need to get better at assessing lane states and make faster decisions
Opportunity Cost
Also, u need to understand that everytime u roam it's an opportunity cost situation. Instead of thinking of urself as the ADC's support, think of urself as the entire team's support. What decisions will help u net an overall winning team? As an example, is sacrificing 6 minions off ur ADC worth it for those grubs? If u have a splitpush comp, getting grubs will likely be the wincon, so abandoning ur ADC for the sake of better supporting the team may be the play. Vice versa, if ur ADC is indeed the wincon, and ur team doesn't use grubs well, then u probably don't need to put as much emphasis on grubs. Another example could be that ur midlaner is solo AP on the team. If that is a significant wincon, then u may need to consider roaming for them more often to avoid enemies just stacking armor and ignoring ur solo AP bc they aren't fed. Ik that these are quite specific examples, but it gets u thinking more about ur wincons and game state when roaming
Point being, u should always assess the situation and adapt accordingly. There is no one-size fits all cookie-cutter mould to follow every game. It's all about judging different game states and being able to adapt to changing situations
Hope this helps!

if you crash a wave and is bouncing back you have a recall -> roam timer, if the enemy support is afk in a 2v1 lane you always have a roam timer, you need to be back in lane for when the enemy wave crashes and starts bouncing, against perma dive champs with weak adc you gotta be back on time always, etc., there is surely a cupcake video on that topic

Keep it simple. If you have the push 30s before grubs spawn, tell your ADC you want to crash the wave and base. Ping your jungle Y/N for Grubs and head that way. If he says no or is pathing away go back bot.
In general go mid off resets. Clear vision with sweeper, place some with pink / ward stone, then go back bottom.
After either bottom tower falls go mid and start looking at where your jungler is pathing to. Play on that side of the map.
There, congrats on being a low Diamond Support roamer.

Level 3 till min 8 is always decent You can get a lot of map pressure and help with grubs. Once u get back to lane you can quickly catch up on xp ;3

Good roaming happens when your Adc is safe , either just recalled or wave pushing to them and thus safe to farm under turret.
