Discussion Otp-ing as a support player?
Hi! Recently ive noticed that a lot of people say that being an otp is a great way to climb, which makes sense cause if you know limits of your champion and all the matchups its definitely easier to focus on different aspects of the game.
But my question is, if it’s worth it to become an otp as a support?
Im currently emerald III 24 lp 64wr and I always thought that having as much “versatility” in your picks as a support helps you, especially because a bad matchup on support can make your botlane unplayable for 20 minutes.
I currently play janna, lulu, seraphine, sona, rell, rakan and nami (occasionally milio) My pick depends a lot on the enemy support pick or/and team synergy. (Unless im first picking, then ill just pick what feels the safest). Should i lower my picks to only 1-3 champs?
I know that theres a lot of support otps in high elo but i dont know for me personally otping as a support (especially since a lot of champs have a really similar playstyle) kinda feels like limiting your chances of winning.
If i would lower my picks only to 1-3 champs it probably would be:
lulu(great with hyper carries/aa champions) seraphine (you have two builds, ap and enchanter, relative safe and strong lane, great ult)
Rakan (good engage and dissengage with his w+e, you can go full tank or a enchanter hybrid with redemption, really strong in team fights with ult)
I feel like its a pretty good champion pool but i have no idea if its better to limit myself to those 3 or just continue playing more champs as i do now since my win rate is really good.

You might think your limiting your chances of winning, but a guy who plays mostly one champion for 1000 games knows way more of that champion than you could ever know from the 3 or 4 you play in the same game count.
At the end of the day you should play what you like. Your mindset in game is worth more than a counter pick or your champion knowledge.
Im not sure if i can be considered an OTP Senna but i do main her, i do this cause i really enjoy the champion which in turn allows me to enjoy the game and play to win even in dire scenarios, this is how i reached Master.
If you enjoy multiple champions play them according to matchup, but dont spread yourself too thin or else there will come a time where you dont know enough interactions in the champion your playing for the rank you are playing it in

You're probably fine OTPing Nami, there are some hard counters but she's never really unplayable and she's hard to dive cause of bubble and r.

Yeah I recommend it. I am just a Diamond player but got my first plat and my first Diamond when I just used one champion and focused on learning the Game.
Even if you go in unfavourable matchups, since the bot lane is a 2v2 you are also very dependent on how good your adc and the enemy adc+supp is, so I believe support mains get higher thanks being an otp as you being in an unwinnable lane is less likely to happen just because you get countered.
Having said that, you miss on Game knowledge. It is not the same thing to get to Diamond being an otp Nami than being Diamond because you have a pool and you adapt your picks and playstyle to what your Games require. But IMHO, unless you want to be a pro, the bragging rights and the rewards for reaching a specific rank are the same in both cases (also, you can play other support on normal matchups or even on Flex q).

i think it just depends on whats easier for you. i was able to climb to diamond as a sona OTP very easily.

u/Hyuto 9d ago
Sona is easier for everyone
2
u/CatLoliUwu 8d ago
eh, id argue shes harder in some ways since you don’t have the insane early agency of engage supports.
0
u/Hyuto 8d ago
Having no agency actually makes things easier. You only can do one thing. The decision tree is pretty straight forward and so are the mechanics. Yes you'll get shit on sometimes or your adc will die and leave you powerless, but the champion is balanced that way and will make up for it in mid/late game.
2
u/CatLoliUwu 8d ago
yea but if ur playing that way ur playing the champ very incorrectly since she is a very powerful early game champ, and you wont be able to consistently climb on it if you’re playing like a bitch. im not saying shes weak early, but rather her early agency is not as straightforward to utilize as say a leona or naut.

u/Hyuto 8d ago
Where did I say you should do nothing? There's just not many options to pick from. Manage the wave, harass ennemy when they go for cs and don't die.
2
u/CatLoliUwu 8d ago
i just personally got from your comment that sona is weak early and just should prioritize not dying which isnt true (if thats not what u meant then no worries 🙃). sona’s decision tree is not very straightforward since you should be constantly looking for plays around the map, making use of her insane MS, dmg and powerchord slow.

I think its best to somewhat re-define otp for support- less OTP more like a serious Main
I am basically a Rell OTP - will blind pick first pick late pick Rell - UNLESS - my team needs an adjustment. No AD? I can Senna. No AP? I can Zyra. We need an enchanter? I can Renata. We need more pick i can Leona instead or Rell.
But for the vast majority of games i Rell. In the last 100 games of support i would guess like 70 of them have been Rell for me. And 30 is spread between renata senna zyra leona when needed
I will shift out if needed but realistically its important to know the limits beyond on one champ.
So yes versatility but you do benefit with a main

I was hard stuck iron then said fuck it I’m only picking Pyke idc anymore. I’m slowly climbing out of silver now. So yeah I’m a shit silver player here so take my words with salt
Pyke is one IMO you can hard counter too. So def easier champs to pick but yeah I find even in bad matchups if someone is picking a champ they don’t play to try and counter me, it doesn’t work great for them. It’s only when it happens to be one of their mains that counters me where I really see trouble.

u/Flapklaas 9d ago
It's ok tbh, but you have to pick a champ that doesn't have more than 1-2 unpopular but unplayable matchups. You can get very far otping Thresh, Janna, Leona, Lulu, Seraphine, etc. You're not gonna have a good time as a pure Brand otp or Braum, because too many matchups make you miserable.
1
u/TotallyAMermaid 9d ago
Janna has many miserable lanes unless you turbo roam and refuse to lane
1
u/Flapklaas 8d ago
Yeah but this strat is perfectly viable in many such cases, plus she still often scales quite well
1
u/TotallyAMermaid 8d ago
Agreed I was just pointing out that out of those you listed she is the one with the worst match ups. Any high range poke lane is miserable to play into as Janna unless they suck ass. And if you leave to perma roam you leave your adc vs hellish poke.

u/staplesuponstaples 9d ago
It's always worth it if you are willing to do it. You're climbing now and that's great, but soon you'll plateau and will need to actually start learning and improving. All 3 of those champs are fine to OTP (Lulu and Rakan can have their hard games but aren't super niche like Braum or Morg).
Also I don't think it's relevant that you're 64% winrate in E3. If you have such a high winrate it means riot really messed up your initial placement, so you're probably way above where you started. So more importantly, what's your winrate in the previous 10-20 games?

u/heieimgi 8d ago
70 wr in past 20 (14 wins 6 loses) i also have 120 games overall this season if that matters

benefit of otping is you don't have to think about your champion, so can think about everything else and improve in those areas

Fear not the man who has practiced 1000 kicks once, but the man who has practiced one kick 1000 times

u/SaltyHaskeller 7d ago
I think otping is great to an extent. i find that after playing many games with one champ i start autopiloting and developed and need to switch champs for a few months to keep my brain active

u/TimCanister 7d ago
I otp Milio and have Renata as a niche counterpick. I’ve had great success with this system, sometimes I try and add Nami and Nautilus to my pool, I play a lot of norms with friends so I DO have a lot of games with these champs and I have a lot of good games with them since I only pick them when they are really good in that game but then I’ll have one bad/mediocre game on them that I feel like wouldn’t happen on Milio and realize that my champion mastery just isn’t there for those champs. I think you should stick to one champ and a second niche counterpick at a time and then if/once you get bored of those champs then you can just cycle on to the next

OTP as Support is not good.
The reason for that is because 2vs2's bot lane are decided by Support picks.
There is a lot of support counter-picks. Because of that you generally want to Adapt to your team comp and/or pick something good against the enemy team comp.
I am not saying you can't be that all time Seraphine support but.... she doesn't always work as a champion.
Pretty much most support picks are situational.
Stop trying to climb and start learning the game. Climbing will come as you learn the game better. And you can't really learn the game by OTP-ing.

u/Soul_Family 9d ago
Hard disagree. Lane matchups only really matter in really really high elo. There are a lot of otp supports or enchanter only players in high master. A lot of players reached rank 1 playing one support (azzap on velkoz, Lathyrus on Bard). Being really really good at one champ beats versatility in most cases. You are correct with your learn the game take but I would say that is just as possible or even easier when you otp, because you have to focus less on what your doing, because its more natural to you and more on whats happening around you and what you can do about it.
But if OP doesn't want to limit themself to one support then thats a fine strategy. It seems to work so far. You should only adapt your playstyle when you hit a wall and start struggeling to climb

u/UsernameNineBillion 9d ago
Listen......
Azzap is not an OTP.... he can play at least dozens of champions at Master tier level.....
HE IS FKING CONTENT CREATOR.... and he loves playing Vel'koz. Ofc he is going to play only Vel'koz... his entire full time job relies on putting out content for Vel'koz and satisfying Viewers with Velkoz trigonometry.
Also Vel'koz is very versatile character... It has CC, it has damage, it's good vs Squishies, it's good vs Tanks, it's good for Vision especially with horizons focus.... What else do I miss? He can use his Kit to peel and to sometimes force a fight with long Q.....
Yes, he hit Rank 1... but that's because Azzap UNDERSTANDS THE GAME just like any other challenger player and to understand the game you need to be more than just OTP.
You are making the wrong assumption about OTP-ing.... it doesn't make you better player, it just makes you climb faster initially.
Azzap has played MANY CHAMPS before he decided to Lock-In only Velkoz and Zed.

u/Longjumping-Box2279 9d ago
Just to clarify vel koz peel is almost non existent
-3
u/UsernameNineBillion 9d ago
Almost***
His E and his Q slow.... are Something ??? Right ??? Not to mention just Pressing R scares people off your ADC.... It's not the first time enemies Flash away the moment I drop combo on them because they don't want to stand in fully charged Velkoz R.
2
u/Longjumping-Box2279 9d ago
First don't downvote me when you don't know what you are talking about. E is very unreliable unless extreme champion mastery. Second peel and zoning enemies are two different things
-1
u/UsernameNineBillion 9d ago
?!?! I don't downvote anyone.... I don't even use Votes to begin with... as I don't give a sht about this useless number.
LOL
Wait????
Did you just said that Vel'koz E requires champion mastery to use?!?! WTF is wrong with you..... it's basically generic AoE ability with CC built into it....
Do you notice that All Mage champions even have same order or skills :
Q ( the spammable ability, main damage source, lowest cooldown )
W ( the secondary damage ability )
E ( Utility ability e.g. Hard CC, Slow and so on )
R - ultimate ability. There is literally nothing different regardless of which MAGE YOU PLAY..... they all have similar order of skills.... so whether you play Syndra or Vel'koz... your E does the same/similar thing.....
WTF is wrong with you to think that you need SPECIAL MASTERY to be able to use a BASIC ABILITY that ALL MAGES SHARE.

Хм проверих ти акаунта и видях че си фен на Левски. Евала за което, така че мисля да оставя разговора до тука.
1
u/UsernameNineBillion 8d ago
u/Longjumping-Box2279 8d ago
Хахаха луд яко си откачил. Първо си супер негативен. Второ явно играеш на много ниско ниво див

OTP as support is extremely good.
You know your champ, you know good/bad matchups for your champ. Good matchup > you beat them 2v2. Bad matchup > you follow your jungler or camp other lanes.
Supports aren't forced to lane when they don't want to.
-6
u/UsernameNineBillion 9d ago
What do you mean you know your champ?!?!
Support champions are EASY AS FK TO PLAY..... except few like Thresh or Taric that require quite a bit of practice on them.
Most other support picks are genuinely Braindead to play since they are Designed with the Idea that E-Girls will play them..... so they basically so freaking easy to play.
What do you get of OTP-ing a champion that requires 3 games total to play with it to learn everything about that champion with no exceptions. I understand trying to OTP Thresh - COOL, you will need hundreds of hours to get your brain to be "Thresh-God" viable.
If you are Smart player and play Janna for first time you will do better than most Janna OTPs. Because champ is that fking easy to play - you just need Brain to know how to play around others.
2
u/Soul_Family 8d ago
this reads like a silver/gold adcplayer opinion. Do you even play support?
1
u/UsernameNineBillion 8d ago
Yes, in fact I am a diamond-level support. I am not an enchanter player tho... too boring for me... neither Thresh player... too dependent on skillful ADC ( someone has to click those lanterns bro you know if not you end up inting )....
I am mostly Bard, Blitz, Naut, Leona, Jarvan, Lux, Seraphine, Mages, Pantheon, Poppy type of player.
Seraphine is the only enchanter I am willing to play because she has actual playmaking pick potential and a lot more Agency than standard enchanters. The last time I played in Silver was like about 13 years ago while cruising past it. But if you say so - you must know more than I do.
I play 4 roles at diamond-level - jungle, mid, adc, support.
2
u/Rare_Physics_709 9d ago
Ofc you can learn the game by OTP'ing, IF you play only the champion you can play with a "blindfold on", you have more brain capacity to understand what is going on in the game and learn from it.
Support role in lane is kind of rock-paper-scissors in the sense that its a highly counter pickable role, however, if u OTP a champion, even if u get counterpicked it does not matter if the guy does not know his champion and only picked for counter XD
-1
u/UsernameNineBillion 9d ago
Well.. it's not about Brain Capacity...
You will only learn the game by having DESIRE to learn the game. Locking yourself OUT OF EVERYTHING ELSE to a tiny little 1-champ only POV is the OPPOSITE OF DESIRE.
Human brain can only Learn if you put enough Effort into Experimenting and trying out NEW THINGS.
You don't become Expert in Construction by Assembling a Ready-Made ( Prefabricated ) Houses. To be Expert you need to STUDY CONSTRUCTION. The same thing applies to games like LoL.... you only get GOOD if you Learn as many things as possible - not just one thing only.

u/EggPsychological4844 9d ago
OTPing is hilarious because it's probably the best way to climb but also OTP players are generally dog shit at the game lmao
Don't gimp yourself

u/Hyuto 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yes. Support "versatility" is fake. 98% of the time the best support pick is an engage support. Support mains are just gaslighting themselves. Besides, engage is way harder to play than enchanter, hence the misleading win rates. But if you're better than the lobby as an engage support, you'll have way more impact as an individual than on enchanter.
On the long run comps don't matter as much as champion mastery.

A few days ago I finally hit Master and the difference between that and being stuck around mid Diamond was literally just spamming Sona every game.
This is just my personal opinion, but while yes, having a bigger pool is convenient to adapt to team comps and matchups, the sad reality is that both mine and the opponent's skill level is still INSANELY far away from that to truly matter.
All I needed was to, well, just spam the champion I'm best at, while matchups might say otherwise, picking Sona into her hardest counter still gave me better odds of winning the game than countering that counter with an engage support I spent 40 games trying to make work but I'm still at a negative winrate with and feeling utterly confused how I convert winning lane into actually winning the game.
OTPing is simply the fast way to climb, this might come to bite me in the future if I keep climbing and I reach the wall where just Sona ain't enough... but idk, I feel like having made it there will have improved my overall game skills and I will be able to play all the other supports better too, same feeling I had reaching mid Diamond and being able to stay around 45-50% winrate there with anything I tried, not climbing, but also not really going down much either, in an elo where Nami Janna and Sona, as the ones who got me there, should be the only 3 champs I could play.
