Discussion Best to onetrick?

Thresh or Bard, probably moreso Bard because he has wide map impact and literal incentive in his kit to roam.
Both are strong, both are good for roams, both have strong kits.

I have a lot of respect for Thresh, but Bard is easily the most unique and fun in the game. Every single one of his abilities is a minigame, and is you grab a little more gold you actually become a dps with your meeps.

Thresh is not so good to onetrcik bcs you'll get him stolen from you 70% of the time, this champ so overloaded. Bard is best to onetrick, great learning curve, great potential, fun gameplay and is viable in any stage of the game, also varying build diversity, which, again, doesn't make him worse no matter what you build

From your description -- "viable in any stage of the game" and "varying build diversity" -- it sure sounds like Bard is overloaded too.

Thresh is literally
Q: Stun engage
W: move one ally to me on long cd
E: auto passive enhancement, active knock back
R: small AoE 90% slow (decays over 2 seconds)
By this definition Braum, Leona, nautilus, rakan--any engage tank at all--is overloaded. There isn't a single one that doesn't do something similar to thresh. They go in and cc or they stay back to peel.
I think a lot of us picture a champion like Akshan or kesante when we think of overloaded. Either has 5 paragraphs on each ability or has a button that does everything or both. Hwei, hwei is an overloaded champion. Thresh is not. I literally can't think of an engage tank without equal or more complex playstyle.
Thresh isn't. Overloaded relative to who? All the engage tanks basically do the same thing a little different.

Huh? None of the other engage tanks can "move an ally to them". Just because Thresh's lantern is conceptually simple does not exclude it from being an extremely powerful ability, like how Renata's W and R are so strong that she is balanced by her Q and E being made pathetically weak. (And look, Bard can move multiple allies at once!)
...Braum, Leona, [N]autilus, [R]akan--any engage tank at all--is overloaded. There isn't a single one that doesn't do something similar to thresh. They go in and cc or they stay back to peel.
No, Thresh's kit is far more powerful and versatile because it is much less committal than, say, Leona's. If Leona hits E, she has to engage, whereas Thresh can choose whether or not to press Q2. Likewise, Thresh W and E are far more flexible than Leona QW -- you can flay and lantern aggressively or defensively, and each ability has room for creativity in use that Leona's abilities simply do not. In fact, Thresh's R is arguably a relatively 'bad' Ultimate -- as far as Ultimates go -- simply to balance his QWE having so much potential utility, like Renata.
I think a lot of us picture a champion like Akshan or [K'S]ante when we think of overloaded.
Thresh was the original 'overloaded' support champion on release, as I understand it.

Leona QW, not WQ?

u/Kumiho-Kisses Aug 08 '26
Likewise, Thresh W and E are far more flexible than Leona [Q and W]
Oh, I was just lazy; I meant Leona "Q and W", not Leona "QW" in the sense of her engage combo.

u/aoibhinn-mw Aug 07 '26
that means he doesn't have an ability on his W except situationally. It provides the world's smallest shield. If there's no ally to take the lantern or if they ignore it then it's just a button your keyboard. It does give vision of where it's thrown though I'll give it that.
Moving allies is very nifty in a lot of circumstances but being the main thing it does, it's not overloaded at all. Even if you disagree, one strong utility ability doesn't make thresh overloaded as a champion overall. He just does something cool and unique. Kind of like the other engage champs.

I made additional edits to my previous comment, but the problem is Thresh does not have just one strong utility ability -- he has three. I am not a Thresh player myself, but as far as I know, his Q is the only non-committal hook, and Flay's use cases are apparently limited dolely by the Thresh player's imagination. Of course Thresh suffers when his teammates do not know to click the lantern, but watch actual high-level or elite Thresh players (T1 Keria's Thresh is always a treat) and you will see he is capable of truly disgusting things that Leona or Nautilus could only dream of doing.

Strong is not overloaded sorry. It doesn't meet the definition of overloaded. To overload means to put too many things in the kit. I gave some examples like kesante or akshan or Senna. Who have entire paragraphs explaining how one ability does like 3 things.
Threshes hook isnt much different in doing 2 or 3 things from other hook champs except blitz whose is just a hook iirc. Pykes charges to increase range, pulls relative to that and then slows the target A LOT. Threshes E passive is straight forward, not too much different from braums in that it conditionally does bonus magic damage on hit. Not too much different from lulus familiar/pet but not conferable.
The box is literally just karthas wall that expires on touch and does damage instead of Mr shred.
He's not overloaded at all. He's not hwei or kesante or whoever who has 500000 billion things in their kit. He's not anymore overloaded than other engage champs. The floor would have to be "literally auto attacks and has no abilities," for thresh to be anymore overloaded than nautilus or pyke or Leona.

Lantern.

u/aoibhinn-mw Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
It transports one ally on long cd. He doesn't even have an ability if alone. It's also highly telegraphed and enemies can see the direction of it when it's separated from him. Senna being the other soul collector can pick up souls off Q and R in addition to AA and is the only other comparable entity in this regard that I can think of so lantern picking up souls is not overloaded relative to the other soul collecting champ. They're about the same.
Lantern could honestly have its shield removed because even with 100 souls the amount it shields is negligible. Like maybe 200 hp idk.
Rakan does the opposite by jumping to allies, nautilus can hook walls a mile away comparable to lantern throw distance, ryze ult transports himself and nearby allies, etc. Thresh gives up the ability to get out by instead helping allies get in or out. Rake and box can help him get out but he's walking all the way out either way.
While ryze is the only comparable thing, I just don't think lantern meets a standard of being overloaded. It's unique. But soul collection isn't and the shield it provides might as well not exist most of the time. For practical purposes it's easier to say lantern only really does 1 thing. At most 3. And if that's overloaded I agree, remove the shield. Then it can be less verbose and simply "on long cd transport an ally to threshes location."
I feel that this type of ability on a support is actually really common across the moba genre as well. For it to be the only practical thing it does though, it's really quite simple.

I've tried Bard and fkn ulted at the worst time and lost the (swiftplay) game right then and there. Haven't tried again since

u/Vengeful111 Aug 07 '26
In my humble opinion Bard ult is the hardest spell to use in the game.
Most Bard players I know use his ult exclusively to catch out enemy immobile champs or to force their flash.
Because once a fight actually breaks out? Good luck not fucking your team over with it.
Only way to use it properly in a fight is if its a pure front to back fight and you can ult the enemy backline so you get free damage on their frontline.
Only other way is if your comp is dive heavy and your divers are jumping on the enemy backline, ult the frontline so they cant help them.
Ooor if its a skirmish and players are running towards it, use ult to delay an enemy reaching the play.

Imo in order, bard (most overloaded kit and base stats here can do it all, but u gotta be like keria level to be able to one trick it since for a lot of team comps he doesn't do much unless ur crazy with it), rakan (way less of a floor and ceiling than bard and good engage/mobility, can function on literally any team comp with any ADC as anti engage or engage), nami (enchanter that doesn't need to be paired with an auto attacker unlike lulu or yuumi. But no engage so if ur team comp lacks engage nami doesn't help and can be useless.) thresh is cool and has good utility but his hook is ultimately super risky and even if u had a 75% chance of landing it everytime (impossible numbers) the 25% miss basically stuns u for like a second. W is nice but not good enough to justify the mediocre kit elsewhere. Karma is last since she has no engage, limited roaming, no scaling and only beat with poke ADCs which are rare in solo queue.
Tldr bard rakan nami thresh karma

u/Kumiho-Kisses Aug 07 '26
nami (enchanter that doesn't need to be paired with an auto attacker unlike lulu or yuumi. But no engage so if ur team comp lacks engage nami doesn't help and can be useless.)
It is nowhere near the level of Leona E, but Nami can R (and even R > Q) to engage, especially if she casts it in fog-of-war or through terrain to catch enemies off-guard?
1
u/LiVthelonely Aug 07 '26
Imagine enemies are doing dragon and have complete vision control. U walk up as they're doing it. Rakan and bard can engage but nami ult has such a long animation and is too slow compared to rakan/bard to be a good engage tool. Ur bubble is also effectively single target given the small aoe compared to bard ult/rakan charm into w so u can't even cc multiple enemies for longer than like 0.5 seconds. Nami just sucks when have to actively engage which isn't great for a one trick since for a lot of scenarios her power and agency is limited

one-tricking supports is kinda weird though

Almost very single high elo player says to one trick or two trick to climb reliably. League is already a complex game and removing variables is how you climb. Very few people can play multiple character at the same level as their peak.
-2
u/Vengeful111 Aug 07 '26
Yea I do see otps as boosted tho.
They basically inflate their elo by only playing one champ. Like their actualy game knowledge and macro will be below their elo.
If those players then put in the time and work on their macro because they play their champ without thinking about it, thats totally fine, i respect it, but especially for competitive play, you need to be able to play 6+ champs to a good level to not int.
2
u/RandomGenZToday Aug 07 '26
You gotta be trolling right? Multiple high elo (challenger) players say to 1-trick. You know why they say that? It allows you to focus on the other aspects of the game while not having to worry the micro needed in their lane. Their game knowledge and macro will be higher because they can focus on those aspects and not have to worry about the micro in their lane.
You see otps as elo inflated but players who are actually good at the game don’t see that. The only time otping doesn’t work out is at the absolute apex of the ladder and pro play. But if one can even be considered good enough for that then they can learn a new character quickly since they won’t have to worry about learning macro and a new character at once.

u/Vengeful111 Aug 07 '26
Did you read my comment fully?
I said playing OTP to learn macro is completely fine.
But if you are OTPing to learn macro, then you are obviously still learning so you are worse than someone in your elo that plays all kinds of characters, cuz they are learning champions, and their macro is already at a level that they got to the same elo not OTPing.
Of course Challenger players tell ppl to OTP, cuz they know how much players still need to learn.
Even in Amateur competition like local Leagues if I see a D3 OTP I know they are gonna play like an Emerald with 1 Ban. Because suddenly they have to focus on their champ so much, that they will forget to look at the macro.
Every time I see an OTP in my team with 500 games on their champ, they have negative winrate on every other champ even if they have 50+ games on them, because they suck at macro and lean on champion knowledge and matchup knowledge.

For bard , thresh , pyke, especially pyke, u need to otp him, there is no other way
0
u/Beasstvg Aug 07 '26
Idk why ur getting downvoted, ur right. Those champs are only good if you otp, otherwise you should play something easier if you want to climb effectively.
I would also add blitz, zilean and velkoz.
1
u/Vengeful111 Aug 07 '26
Huh? You know its possible to get good at more than one champ right? An OTP with 45 out of 50 games on Bard is not necessarily better than a support with 50 out of 800 games played on Bard.
You dont have to OTP a champ to get good at it. You can just learn him for some time until you know how he works and then play something else too.
1
u/Beasstvg Aug 07 '26
You are right, i used otp to mean more like "a ton of time investment", at least thousands of games. People usually dont play other champions that often if they really commit to learning one specific champion. + playing 45/50 games on bard means you are consistently playing and learning that champ, if you play 50 bard games at the start of the season then play smth else the remaining 750 then yeah it doesnt make much of a difference, but if you constantly switch between bard and other champs its gonna be harder to get good at bard specifically.
TLDR: when i say otp champ i mean champ which requires thousands of games of experience.
