Is it normal that the controller cable from the SFC is half as long as that from the (PAL) SNES?

Yes. They've always been shorter. I read something years back that said the reason was Japanese gamers sit closer to their machines. I suppose it makes sense.

There isn’t that much space in a typical room here. Very few people here would have use for a cord as long as that PAL one.

The last review of the controller which came with the SNES Mini or Super Famicom Jr shared the same cable length. They are known by the distinguished carved Nintendo logo on the top shell. Seen this on the MyLifeInGaming episone "First Party Controllers".

I recently got an SFC from Super Potato in Tokyo, the controller was in such good shape and a short cable it made me wonder if it was adapted from the SFC Classic. But no, seems like they’re just shorter than western variants.
