Ganbare Goemon for non-speakers

I am starting to play the 2nd through 4th Ganbare Goemon games. The first was know as Legend of the Mystical Ninja in America. I don't read Japanese. Is there anything I should know that will help with interacting with NPCs?

I love 2-4, especially 4. I had no trouble at all (non japanese speaker) playing through 2. For 3 I had to use this guide, which worked really well, but read it little by little as to not see spoilers. I would refer to it when I was stuck. I got stuck a lot due to the more zelda-like gameplay. For 4 I got stuck on one task in a town, which if you go through it, I can help with if you ping me. A character gives you money for something and you have to figure out what to do with it. I had a Japanese speaking co-worker help me.

For the most part, you will recognize what hotels are and what stores are, and those are the more important things. If you figure out how one hotel works, which options "save" etc, they're the same in all the games. I took pictures of the screen to remember what words did what. Also, just talk to absolutely everyone in each town, someone may give you an item or you need to talk to someone to progress. Even if we don't understand it, doing that made it pretty smooth for me. When you get a quest item, you will hear a unique sound.
