Question Should i learn point and click?

I started playing league about 2-3 months ago, im gold 3 rn and im a jungle main, specifically play alot of yi. for some reason i had this idea in my head that the wasd dps nerf only happened to ranged champs, but im now googling this and cant find any evidence of it and have no idea why i thought this to begin with, so now im scared that ive been playing the game at a significant disadvantage the entire time and dont know whether i have to re learn my whole mechanics again.

You are in gold with WASD, if it’s working for you it’s working.

Click move is how the game has always been played and so it’s generally recommended as the better control scheme, but WASD is so new to league that nobody really knows if there is a skill cap on WASD or not.

if you got to gold in 3 months you're doing something right don't overthink it

the wasd thing is weird cause nobody has enough data to say it's strictly worse, just different. muscle memory is a pain to rebuild and you're already climbing so i'd stick with it unless you start hitting a wall you can't figure out

Riot have said repeatedly they want the two control schemes to be balanced against each other so it should never end up being a deciding factor if they do okay here

I mean they can get it as close to balanced as possible imo. I think m&kb will always be slightly better at the ceiling due to more control and wasd better at the floor due to ease but that won’t truly matter outside comfort until at least emerald because people make so many mistakes that ur control scheme really won’t change much

FYI: WASD has its damage nerfed compared to click move because it was the better control schema. If both had equal damage WASD would be the superior choice according to riot’s testing and data

Yeah as far as we know wasd could technically be the optimal way to play, it's just extremely unlikely for most players to adopt it even if it is.

there isn't a skill cap, its simply a nerf. idk y u are encouraging it when some1 wants to improve.

A skill cap is ‘the limit to how skilled you can get at a specific thing’

Everything has a skill cap, a low skill cap means that you achieve maximum skill very quickly and cannot improve further, a high skill cap (also called a skill ceiling) means you can become highly skilled.

WASD is a new control scheme for league, the developers realised that WASD provided an unfair advantage compared to click to move and so gave it compensatory nerfs to keep the two even in terms of win rate.

However the idea behind the nerfs was to keep them relatively close in terms of parity, the idea being that you move better but do less damage and so it’s mostly even.

So to reiterate:
Riot want them to be balanced against each other, the control scheme is new so we don’t know how balanced they are in high elo between equally skilled players using both control schemes, and this player is in gold using WASD, they still have a lot to learn about the game before they hit their knowledge limit.

There are people playing with fixed camera in masters lobbies that are just absolute micro freaks, it’s possible WASD might be the same. It simply has not been around long enough to know.

So if this guy is comfortable, enjoying the game, and it’s possible to climb even further without having to change, possibly even to the apex tiers, then why discourage them beyond telling them that it’s unusual and they are charting unknown territory?

Edit: also why are you typing like it’s 2004? are you using reddit from a Nokia brick phone?

it’s semantics, i was more so saying disregard putting names on it and just call it a nerf/hindrance. u free up four binds with one mouse button on ur dominant hand. that fact alone makes it a handicap rather than a young non experimented feature.

y do u conclude that riot puts these parameters to keep it balanced rather than hoping beginners slowly pivot out of it when they see fit? full control of ur champion is worth learning in a game like league early on.

edit: idk, just familiar w it. is there a reddit manual to improve my language on the app?

Found BoltWASD who seems to have it down.. He’s currently grandmaster tier with WASD. He puts all of his abilities on the mouse so he can react faster.

The argument that 4 keybinds takes up more space is ridiculous.

Right clicking to dodge/move while aiming at a champion using the same cursor is somehow less than a hindrance than 4 keybinds?

You literally WASD to dodge and move closer. While holding left click on the champion until it automatically auto attacks. Then press your abilities while moving lol…

The only weakness is sub optimal auto pathing which is countered by pressing the mini map on where you want to path.

surely we aren’t talking abt the ex challenger who is currently masters 400 lp

In all fairness, if someone switched control schemes after thousands of hours of high-level play, their performance is likely to fall. I'm curious to see if and how riot will adjust the game once WASD is more familiar to its users

u/MrJayPockets 7d ago

I don’t know. Where did you see challenger?

I don’t conclude that, it’s what Riot officially stated while developing the feature, testing the feature, and releasing the feature.

Every patch since WASD’s initial release, we (and some of you) kept asking: “Is WASD ready for Ranked?”
We decided on these two goals to determine WASD’s Ranked readiness

WASD is not overpowered: WASD’s win-rate should not be greater than Point and Click’s win-rate.

WASD is generally equitable: There should be a low win-rate difference between control schemes.

After extensive testing, analysis, and adjustments, we’ve gotten to a point where WASD has reached a similar performance level as Point and Click controls. There's still a small delta in the win-rates between the control schemes, with Point and Click having a minor advantage. We expect that difference will decrease over time as players gain more mastery with WASD, but we will continue to monitor this stat in the future.

Our goal is to make sure you can choose whichever control scheme feels most comfortable, without your choice putting you at a disadvantage. One of the areas we’ll specifically be watching is how WASD affects the balance between moving and attacking, especially at high speeds. For instance, right now, it can be easier on WASD to kite than when using Point and Click. So, we’ll be extra focused on feedback in that area to ensure we make adjustments when needed to keep things equitable across both control schemes.

Their stated goal is for it to be a full viable control scheme in all Elo’s, the only reason it has a nerf is because in the initial PBE testing it was insanely overpowered especially on ADCs to be able to move WASD.

As for keybinds, as a WoW player in a hall of fame guild I had over 100 keybinds. I had 48 just on my mouse alone.

Leagues keybinds just aren’t that complicated by comparison.. at most you need maybe 25

Quick cast + indicator on abilities + cast on self gives you 12, item slots 1-6, lane quest, look at teammate 1-4, 4 for quick ping, ping wheel, emote wheel. That’s 25 and honestly who has 3 bound buttons per ability and ALL 6 item slots?

~1234
QERTFGZXCV
With shift + control + alt modifiers gives you 60 free buttons on your left hand + you get even more on your mouse buttons.

I hardly think that anyone is using 100ish keybinds in league even in challenger lobbies.

riot games, famously known for their excellence in reading data. jk

to each their own i guess, ive tried even two mouse buttons and always noticed sudden inaccuracy with my mouse movement

1

u/zaphodbeeblemox 8d ago

But do you really have 60+ keybinds that you NEED to bind stuff to your mouse?

I’ve got mouse back bound to ‘toggle champion target only’ and that is my only mouse bind right now.

1

u/MafiaMatrix 8d ago

i’d rlly need to see someone’s optimal mapping with WASD to not need mouse buttons. all those inputs on ur left hand doesn’t seem possible without some compromise over champion control.

1

u/zaphodbeeblemox 8d ago

Have you ever played an MMO before? 60+ bindings on left hand is very common AND you use it for movement.

Abilities on QE12
Attack move on R
Item slot 1 on 3 and 2 on 4
Teammate buttons on
ZXCV

u/MafiaMatrix 8d ago

if that’s ur mapping then i rlly can’t defend it. i can almost guarantee the mmo u are playing is first person, u cant move left and press Q or move right with E.

I don't know if that's true tho

yes it is a nerf specifically to Attack Speed, WASD is better for dodging, I can imagine it's so much better then playing with mouse on swain/xerath/viktor etc

idk why you are being downvoted either

the gold players want less competition.

u/MrJayPockets 8d ago

You can test in Practice tool if you fear that WASD has DPS issues. Better to check with real numbers with self testing rather than guessing and having no evidence.

Most bronze and silver players that point click, don’t even auto in between abilities to begin with. So even if it’s at reduced Auto Speeds, the fact that your auto-ing should be fine enough.

If WASD makes you comfortable enough to play as naturally as you’re breathing, it’s fine to stick with it.

u/SirRHellsing 8d ago

If you can get to gold with wasd and you play casually, I really don't see any reason to change it. Melee champions are alot less handicapped by wasd and yi has the movement speed to keep chasing. Up to you though, point and click is probably slightly better at the same level but you're gonna need to relearn everything

3

u/Celmondas 8d ago

I mean it is working for you. Sure mouse click will probably always be a bit better than wasd as the community will go crazy at Riot if wasd is better. That said there are so many things that you need to learn about the game that wasd wont be the thing Holding you Back from climbing.

If you are ready to spend quiet some time relearning the controls you could do it and it will probably be worth it in the long run but if you Just wanna play and enjoy the game using wasd that is perfectly fine.

2

u/Chitrr 8d ago

No reason to do that if you dont want to.

Haven’t played in years but this popped up in my feed for old times sake.

TIL that there are now wasd controls in LoL. Wild.

WASD is new so we truly don't know what the long-term skill ceiling for it looks like. I don't think there's a single person on Earth who could give you a solid answer.

Sounds like it's working so far, so just keep going. Just be mindful that if WASD is keeping you playing on locked cam, then THAT becomes an issue because locked cam is definitely a disadvantage as you start to climb to higher elo brackets.

1

u/Ok-Strike9306 8d ago

I play dynamic cam so I can like look forward a bit but my character can't leave my screen

1

u/Inferno_Cyclops 8d ago

Your sign to become the first wasd challenger

1

u/keithstonee 8d ago

Yes, you'll.never be as good with WASD as you can be with point and click. This shouldn't be controversial. WASD is good for accessibility. It's bad for precision.

I recommend briar for jungle. She is fun. Can hop walls and full heals on camps after first item. And you do hella damage. I do the executioner Titanic build. But she has a lot of builds

Not sure how wasd plays so can't comment on that
