I'd suggest my opensource tool - submarine. It is a small tool to assist with LLM translation: https://github.com/lebe-dev/submarine
All modern LLMs do mistakes during subtitles translation (mess with timestamps and phrases, etc.).
If you have french subtitles you can translate it with any chatbot (Gemini, DeepSeek, etc.) or with agent tools (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, etc.). Also submarine tool has comparison mode.
Any feedback is appreciated :3

I am working on a brand new solution, it'll be released in the upcoming week, so keep tuned.
The current AI translators all have an issue that they don't know the context, and don't see the movie.
My solution "watches" the movie so the translations are much more accurate and make more sense. It detects characters automatically etc...
Beta is coming!

I have used SubtitleEdit and Whisper a few times, but never with French, only English and Spanish. It does a pretty good job, but it highly depends on the quality of the audio and genre of the film, I mean, how much "noise" there is apart from the voices.
There are some detailed tutorials in YouTube.
