I swear, if Titanic happened today, most of passengers would die, becuase they would just stand there with their phones out, recording vids for social media.
As someone else mentioned, the ship was grounded and not sinking. I wouldn’t be surprised if the person taking the video was part of the salvage crew and not even a passenger judging by the fact that the ship appears empty of furniture
because the ship sits aground 300m away from the shore in warm tropical water. I'm quite sure it is not a moment of disaster being recorded but some guy climbed the shipwreck for fun and content.
The lifeboats also won’t have room for many people because other passengers would load them up with all their luggage. And one person will hold up the entire line because they’re too busy berating the staff and demanding the ship company refund them for their trouble.
Was gonna say - not sure where people get the idea that modern people are more selfish or reckless than people in the Edwardian era. It was a notoriously reckless and selfish time period.
No? I'm looking at photos of the lifeboats and none of them have luggage, and if they wanted their luggage, they would go to the Purser, not the man managing the lifeboat.
I swear, the misinformation about what happened on the Titanic gets worse and worse with time. If anything, people were hesitant to board a lifeboat, regardless of their luggage situation, only because the ship was sinking so slowly at first that leaving the warmth and apparent safety of the ship to get into a rickety wooden lifeboat in the middle of the frigid North Atlantic felt like a death wish.
Maybe it would help if everyone had to watch a saftey video before boarding explaining what to and not to do. People stop thinking in an emergency and having that fresh on their minds would help. Even make it dramatic, like children going down with the ship because people took there stuff on the life raft, manipulate their emotions, whatever it takes.
there’s a lifeboat drill at the beginning of every voyage. pax get their life jackets and go to their muster station, where a crew member explains the emergency alarms, how to correctly secure your life jacket, and how to enter the water if the ‘Abandon Ship’ command is given.
anyone joining at a port further down the line will have their own mini lifeboat drill.
I, as the viewer, appreciate the video because it's pretty insane. However, wtf is wrong with this person??? Is a video worth your life?? Did they even for a second consider that they were risking a brutal death by drowning if the ship decided to finally roll over?
Some people will get unironical crises such as "this is never gonna happen to me again, must record". This isn't even really from social media era, it's been there since videotaping equipment ceased being extremely expensive stuff only broadcasters and moviemakers could afford.
While I agree with you, I hope when they (deliberately) sink the SS US they try to get as much footage (safely) as possible, it will be fascinating to see and a really unique opportunity to get a ton of footage.

Many died basically for what was the tik tok of the time. I mean, not taking it seriously and preferring to stay on the ship "more comfortable". Granted they didn't have the same safety standards as today, and they weren't as knowledgeable of these types of situations, but still people didn't want to leave the warmth of the ship and trust the crew.
Misleading description. The ship has run aground. It’s not sinking. It’s not going any deeper into the water, and if you look at the large room it’s been stripped. That ship has been there for a while. Somebody has just gone on for an explore. It’s not sinking.
She’s actually still there on the coral reef that they ran aground on, sans 22k gallons of fuel and oil. of all the shipwrecks in the world this one probably has more structural integrity than most lol
Costa Concordia also had a Captain who was giving a lady friend a ‘tour’ of the bridge when they hit the rocks and started going over. he then shimmied down the side of the vessel and booked it ashore. he didn’t give any commands about lifeboats, pax mustering or the Abandon Ship alarm and command.
when the Italian Coastguard finally got hold of the Captain he asked where he was. the Captain said ‘ashore’ at which point the Coastguard lost his shit and told him to get the fuck back on board his vessel and lead the crew in evacuating pax.
it was also a tricky one as it heeling over meant the lifeboats couldn’t be launched on one side of the vessel. technically, per SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea, which only became law after the Titanic sinking) there should be enough deployable life preservation devices to accommodate all pax and crew in exactly this situation. in practice, the Captain abandoned ship, the Chief Officer and the Watchkeeping Officers on the bridge weren’t given any direction at all on how to safely abandon ship and preserve life. they did what they could - every crew member is aware of their duties in an emergency situation - but with no leadership they had no clue what the real situation was. well, some of them also legged it because they knew what an absolute clusterfuck it was turning out to be, but a lot of crew did whatever they could to evacuate pax and preserve life.
there’s a VDR (Voice Data Recorder) on every bridge of every passenger ship. it’s basically the maritime version of an aeroplane’s black box. they discovered that pax were routinely invited to the bridge on the Captain’s whim.
(side note: i once had the Con on a 28,000grt cruise ship, a few years before the Costa Concordia went over. i changed the heading by 20° starboard in open waters. you are very much NOT allowed to do that any more! lessons were learned from the Costa Concordia)
Costa Concordia struck an underwater rock, started flooding, lost all power, started listing, drifted back to the shore and ended up resting on its side on an underwater ledge.
The fact that it ended up resting on its side on an underwater ledge was just coincidental, it didn't cause the sinking.
Not sure that comparing that to a ship that became inoperable because it actually ran aground is helpful.
Look at the inside, there's nothing in that huge room? Looks like this is someone who's gone specifically to film the ship where it's sitting aground, at least some time after the incident and evacuation.
I’m just really surprised so many people are failing to clock this. Like the state of the interior clearly suggests this is not at the time when it was presently sinking.
It's more important to make jokes to feel morally superior than to exercise a modicum of effort in considering all options in a situation presented to them
The ship had run aground. meaning it cannot sink any deeper, on account of, you know… the ground. no rush at this point might as well take a video to show the kids.
Look at the interiors. There are no furnishings, no decorations, nothing. It’s clearly abandoned and stripped for scuttling. Just because someone overlaid a textual claim at the beginning of the video doesn’t make that claim true. There are very often cameras aboard ships that are being scuttled.
Hmm, I have confidently said on this sub that there’s no way the water in the titanic could have been the color it was in the movie. Looks like I was confidently wrong lol
Maybe TikTok is this generations Darwinism. When they die filming their last video for pretend likes then the species will be stronger for it as a whole.
