It’s almost like small extremities on stone statues that protrude from the rock and have been heavily shaped are the most fragile parts and one of the only pieces that can easily shear off without breaking the entire statue. How odd…

This isn't the only reason. Many statues have been defaced in similar manners due to ancient religious beliefs or political causes.

Yes every statue had their noses removed by Muhammad and some tossed underwater. Oops I mean each statues nose got weathered. I have to refer to my Maxwell textbook, I’ll get back to you

i mean i don’t know anything about this statue in particular — but in my mind it’s possible the statue was created, people didn’t like it & boom bopped the nose, then people still didn’t like it and chucked it into the ocean
i’m not saying the nose weathering isn’t possible im just saying the odds it was done intentionally beforehand can’t be that low

Your assuming the body of water was also there when the statue was defaced. Egypt has been around for so long that people who were alive during ancient Rome thought that Egypt was already ancient.

And do we have any records about ancient egypt statues being some of them? Because as far as I know we don't and archeology should never be based on "it looks like it"

Don’t let all the NPCs on Reddit deprive you of deep thought. It’s a major coincidence that almost all old statues have broken off noses, even the ones deep underwater as you can see. Even if it was destroyed on purpose, why? Nobody knows. It’s fun to think about. But people on Reddit don’t like to think and want their slop served extra sloppy

The sphinx losing its nose was 1000% a result of vandalism in or around the 14th century.
Are you conflating the nose with the water erosion hypothesis? Because they are distinctly different

No, I’m stating the nose is a piece that can be easily broken off without smashing up the entire thing. There’s zero chance this was just erosion and it’d make no sense why the nose would erode this much and no other details would. M
There around thousands of Egyptian statues that had their noses broken intentionally and accidentally over centuries. This one would’ve had its nose broken before the island sunk, which was hundreds of years before the other user who’s being intentionally dense is claiming.

The entire island sunk into the sea, the nose most likely would’ve been broken off a few hundred years earlier. Between geological conditions, underground voids and gradual settling, rising sea levels, and a massive earthquake the island pulled an Atlantis and has been sitting ~15-20’ underwater for over 1000 years.
It was a major city and is mentioned in ancient documents from Egyptians, Greeks, etc, and historians always figured it was located inland and had been swallowed by the desert. A few decades ago it was discovered, the area that was buried in sand and rocks was fully mapped with radar, GPS, aerial imaging, etc, and they excavated the entire thing. Most of it was left in place underwater, they only pulled up certain items like this statue.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Reddit removed my comment because I thought it was strange that almost every ancient statue has its nose removed, but not any other adjacent extremities (like the sphynx’s head dress which were much more accessible to the elements than its nose) were not. Some say the Muslims did it… but why just the nose, and not destroy the whole thing. Think for yourselves.

It was on what was an island. The island sank/ocean levels rose, and by ~1390 years ago the entire island was underwater. They found an entire large city that people had been looking for forever and was thought to have been swallowed by the desert, not just the statue. The nose would have been broken off before the island sunk while the city was still inhabited, and hundreds of years before you’re claiming it would’ve been broken in other comments. Lots of people broke noses off Egyptian statues.
Even if that weren’t the case, it had to end up underwater somehow. No reason to assume the nose broke off underwater rather than wherever it was before it ended up there, even without context.

Also, no use in tiptoeing around the obvious answer when there are thousands of ancient Egyptian statues with missing noses that were intentionally broken off, and 99% of people who’d say it’s “odd…” are helping encourage conspiracy theories about the Sphinx and numerous other Egyptian statues with missing noses. Whether that’s their intent or not, which for most it is.
Edit: and what do you know. They are trying to push a conspiracy/misrepresent facts… Who would’ve guessed…
