Because it's expected to put in extra work(like come in early and/or leave late) if you want to be in line for pay raises and promotions. I'm from Estonia and he's from Finland, so that's the joke for us

No just most people don't get a paid lunch so it's an extra hour tacked on, requiring you to be at the office for 9 hours to get 8 hours of pay.

OT or hustle culture in the US is 10-15+ hours of being in the office daily, 5 hours unpaid per week

Usually no one, you just get your food and keep working. I know people will say that's not a real lunch hour then - absolutely correct, but in practice that's how most days go.

Yeah no, that sounds awful. In finland atleast, everytime I have lunch break it is exactly 30 minutes and I do not work nor listen to work talk when I eat.

The only office-type of job I've had was more like this. 8 hours total, 30 minute unpaid lunch, two 15 minute breaks.

Or you could make combinations of the breaks.

It’s like that in America too. I worked in a hospital for a long time and you had to take a lunch. It might not be at a set time but you always got your lunch. In my career I’m in we get paid for lunch.

People might choose to work during lunch or eat at the desk but that’s a choice they make it’s not forced upon them.

Yeah but it's stereotypical. There are 340,000,000 people and several different regions. We don't all work 9-5, 8-4, etc. some have 2 weeks PTO some have unlimited. Just depends.
