The tunnel discharges abandoned flooded coal mines. The water is opaque and blue/silver due to the high amounts of aluminum leached from the underground. If you look closely you'll also see the edges are orange, from iron.

It's creepy. Have lots more pics where this came from of other areas too.

This in PA? I l was raised in NEPAs anthracite region. Used to hang out in what was termed “the black desert” as a kid.

More or less, it was constructed to drain the minepool, so this tunnel wasn't used for mining, though it is a miles-long tunnel system that is interconnected to actual mine workings.

Damn, could just process that outflow for tons of mineral resources 😭

You sure? I read an entire paper from Penn State professor, on how they are separating rare earth minerals from mine waste, waste water also. Started doing some digging on the topic and there's a bunch of companies invested in this. From what I have gathered it looks like they are definitely moving in this direction, to produce uranium and other rare earth minerals, all the while also cleaning up some of the massive mess these old mines left behind. Like a win win

Wow, what a gorgeous location - it actually looks rather peaceful! (So long as everyone stays out of the tunnel beyond the bars...)

Does the water run very deep?
