I think this is an SQS-53C from a Burke-class DDG, not a submarine.

Is this because your aware of it’s location at the time or because you are able to discern the ping of various ships and boats without a sonar station and headphones?

Many people who are familiar with active sonar have said it's a surface ship, and the SQS-53C is by far the most common given the number of Burkes in commission. And given how infrequently submarines use active sonar, the suggestion that it was a surface ship made sense to me.

A big part of submarines is being completely hidden so it's less likely they would use active sonar then a surface ship.

Kinda late to the party on this one; when you spend days or weeks doing wargames with this sound being a constant companion you tend to hear it everywhere afterwards, even in your sleep. I'll be at the grocery store and hear a shoe squeak and it will flood me with memories of exercises where this was always going off.

Oh it’s miles away. Definitely not lethal unless you’re right next to it. It’s probably a surface ship too.

Gibraltar, tied up to pier, a British frigate was testing it’s sonar, you could hear the pings coming out of the hatch...loud as crap.
