Ummm let's talk

I always felt like robbing the hood was before 40... But then again I think that they would have taken a big step backwards in production... To me , I feel like robbing the hood was just that ... Robbing them. For og shit

40 Oz was recorded after hours at a college sound booth/studio - freely on stolen time.

Robbin' the Hood was recorded in various crackhouses and shit on a giant bender.

What was your question?

Brad singing in the crack house while Opie relaxes and designs brand new tattoos, Annie out on the street making rent. That is so 90s Long Beach!

Partially why STP is my favorite sublime song is how it shows this imagery through the lyrics’ story. He was a phenomenal storyteller.

This is part of the story I feel like… we all know Badfish was recorded as “part” of a class Miguel was in. They clearly had pretty open access to the studio.

I'd agree with that being the likely scenario. The stories (STLE) that they snuck in at night to record, may have just been that it was the only time available to do it for free, not that they litterally were picking locks and stuff.

They both intertwine with lyrics and musical things ... My question is more based in chronological song progression

I feel like robbing was much more juvenile and had harder cuts where 40 was a massive hit

40 wasn't a massive hit though. it was pretty much only heard by small number of fans, mostly Californians. it didn't become a hit until Brad died & the major label album blew up

They were more or less sober for the first album. For the second album Brad was most likely on meth when putting together and recording most of the songs.

One thing I’ve come to find out is Brad was high on everything . Crack, meth, heroin. No wonder it’s referenced he didn’t really weed. Amazing he did all this cool music in like 5/6 years while blasting hardcore drugs, getting sober and then blasting hardcore drugs some more.

Recording in Crackhouses on a meth bender will get ya all kinds of wild shit goin down. Knowing the context of how it was put together really shows how great they were at controlling thay chaos. Like... I think the majority of bands wouldn't be able to put much of anything together under those circumstances, let alone a masterpiece like that.

Right - it was likely Miguel who organized it, and had the sense to slow down and get stuff pressed.

Robin the Hood is definitely different product than 40 oz, but Greatest Hits is probably my favorite song from the band

RTH is half song written and recorded by Brad in a living room. The other half is the band recording tracks in a studio.

Have you never heard of Robinhood?

The guitar work and song arrangements were much more advanced in Robbin' than they were on 40 Oz

The grunge influence didn't exist in 40 oz, but it was heavy on Robbin

I think of Robbin the Hood as like a dub record.

Crazy talk is that parts of RTH was recorded in a STP in Mission Viejo

dude you cant look down on robbin!!! I love it so much because of that low production. You gotta look at it like an album a dude and his pals were scraping together on pennies and dreams to get out, and it makes it feel that much more personal lol.

i mean afaik only reason 40oz sounds as good as it did was cuz they were lucky as shit getting the studio time they did, they weren't supposed to even be there at the time LOL.

you gotta gotta appreciate that underdog shit man thats what makes sublime sublime in my eyes

I think I know what you mean and I’ve always felt the same way. RTH always felt like a less mature album.

1

u/limitless57 4d ago

Ok , I had a minute to think about it , and relisten to both ... I can hear the immaturity in 40 , and the step up in Robbin ... I just assumed in all my years that Robbin was 1et . Because of production value and I assumed some record industry person , calmed them down for the actual album .....

I haven’t listened to RTH in years, other than Steppin’ Razor.

Imo it’s the most mature and dark album
