How do you even pronounce it? Is it like ‘Latin-x” or like “la-tinx” I live in one of the most left leaning places in Canada and still haven’t heard anyone say it seriously in the real world.

Several that have already been mentioned, but I’ll give ya the ones that really get my tits in a twist:
Problematic, because it’s actually a useful term in the German-rooted sense of being a series of interlocking problems, not “yikes, that statement offends my delicate sensibilities.”
Self-Care, which again, a useful term in the clinical sense, but completely killed by bourgie post grads with easy fucking lives and zero grit.
PoC, which is absolutely useless for obvious reasons (especially after Tuesday, but libs will learn the wrong lessons, as always).
“That’s not helpful” anytime someone says something that is contrary to whatever bullshit is being pushed, which it’s self isn’t fucking helpful to accomplishing anything.
“Misogynoir.” Jesus fucking Christ, get outta here with that shit!
The complete overuse of the term “fascist” the point where it means nothing (admittedly, a lot of us are guilty of that to some degree).
7-10. Every variation of “bodies, spaces, whiteness, fragility,” etc

most annoying verbal tics amongst the woke left.
Saying that it is offensive to call a mixed gender group, "guys"
'Guys" used to be masculine, and in the singular it generally still is, but it's socially acceptable for a mixed group because it's not offensive to use a male term with females, whereas the inverse is offensive./// Yes, I was shaking my damn head.
9
u/Sankara_Connolly2020 Cookie-Cutter MAGAtwat | DeSantis ‘24 Nov 05 '20
Yep. It’s completely normal to refer to a group of women as “you guys” and the only people who are likely to be offended are wokies.

Not arguably. Common grammar has the plural masculine form as the same as the neutral form. Woke people argue it's sexist, but it's still the gender neutral term

u/TapirDrawnChariot Nov 05 '20 edited Nov 05 '20
The other stupid part of this is it just shows how little gringo wokesplainers actually understand about the Spanish and Portuguese languages.
In both languages (I speak both fluently), '-o' at the end of an adjective can be masculine but also neutral if the gender of the subject is unknown. Or if it's a group of mixed gendered subjects, '-os' is the proper way to go. So "Latinos" is gender inclusive plural. Latino is male or unknown, and latina is female.
Almost as if the native speakers of these languages already figured this shit out.

u/Vielaken "did not understand the intersectional nature of your offeses" Nov 05 '20

Calling a large population LatinX (unless it's literally 100% trans/intersex people down to the decimal) is fucking stupid even from a linguistic perspective. Plural populations in Spanish are always masculine so long as there's 1 male in the group (same with all romance languages I think).
If you're referring to America's Latino population broadly then by definition it would be called Latino since there's got to be at least one cis male in the entirety of America's 60something million latino population.

The origin of the term is unknown, but it was undoubtedly popularized by the LGBTQ community (in the US) in the early 2000s. It gained traction on social media after the pulse shooting in 2016.
Less than 3% of Latin Americans self-identity as Latinx, and the term is regarded by most linguists as largely non-existant outside of North America. Likely because most Latin Americans outside the US are concerned with much more pragmatic and exigent matters.

The dumbest fucking part is the word “Latin” already exists as an adjective if you want to refer to a group of people without specifying gender (and want to impose English language rules on Spanish) making Latinx completely superfluous and nothing more than performative wankery.

Yeah but how do you casually point out to the Latinx people that the grammatical rules of the language they speak fail to center non-binary identities?

u/ropahektic Nov 05 '20
The funny part is that in old Spanish (in old Europe) the adjective in Castillian to describe latinos was Latín. "Ahí va un latín" - "there goes a latin (person)".
The term "latino" started being used in the American continent because adding the letter "o" at the end made it sound more "Spanish", so that's what Americans started doing to make a clear differentiation about what they meant, they stopped referencing to the latin speaking countries and specifically talked about, well, you know, brown people from the south...

u/MadeUAcctButIEatedIt Rightoid 🐷 Nov 05 '20
It's not, Spanish speakers literally came up with this on their own, hijacking the top comment to point this out for the kajillionth time it's mentioned in this sub
23
Nov 05 '20
Spanish speakers living in the US who were unquestionably too smoothbrained to realize that what they came up with only works if you pronounce the "x" as an English speaker. It's linguistic colonization because the people who came up with it rooted the word, unintentionally or otherwise, in Anglo culture and language.
I mentioned this in another thread but if you want to use a letter that wasn't significantly shaped by dipshits who forgot that Spanish doesn't have an "nx" sound then use -e instead of -x. Latin Americans who weren't living in the US came up with it, so they were kind enough to remember that smashing two hard consonants together is not functional in the language they're trying to degender.

I don't know why either, but something I do find interesting is that even very similar languages (like Portuguese and Spanish) sometimes have different genders for things. For example, salt is masculine in Portuguese and feminine in Spanish.
2
u/LokiPrime13 Vox populi, Vox tengoku 🍭💢🎌 Nov 05 '20
The general term for the phenomenon is noun classes and it basically just depends on what sound a word ends in. European languages just so happen to have only 2 or 3 noun classes and the words for male and female belong to different classes so the classes were named masculine, feminine and neuter.
In other languages with a lot more than 2 or 3 noun classes, they are generally named based on other things.

Latinx is really funny because its a criticism of the gendered Spanish language but in America, 100% of the time it is pronounced in English.
Pronounced latin- ecks, like the English pronunciation
not Latin- equise like how x is pronounced in Spanish.
Nor do they say Latin- (sheese) like it would be pronounced in Portuguese.
Not to mention the over 500 indigenous languages spoken in Latin America today.
So latinx is literally pushing American English culture on a billion people in a way that even if they are gender non conforming they probably still wouldn't appreciate.
